They are a potential food source because they are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants,\u201d explained Dr Veryl Hasan SPi MP, the supervisor of the\u00a0FPK\u00a0community development team<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<p>Sea grapes belong to the type of seaweed. However, unlike other types of seaweed, sea grapes can be consumed directly without any processing.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a great opportunity in the sea grapes market.\u00a0This green caviar\u00a0has a high price in the market, but on Giliyang Island, sea grapes are only consumed by local people, with no cultivation or commercialization efforts,\u201d Veryl explained.<\/p>\n\n<p>The activities of the community development\u00a0team included determining the location of the\u00a0Caulerpa racemosa\u00a0sea grape ecosystem in the coastal area of \u200b\u200bGiliyang Island, identifying macroalgae species found, and disseminating the findings and benefits of macroalgae to local communities.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Three days of diving<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p>The community development team\u00a0from Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science UNAIR\u00a0explored and looked for the location of the sea grape ecosystem by diving at several points.\u00a0With information from the local community, the team managed to find a potential location for sea grapes habitat in the strait between Giliyang Island and Dungkek Sub-district.\u00a0After diving for three days, the team managed to find 13 species of macroalgae, including two species of sea grapes,\u00a0Caulerpa racemosa\u00a0and\u00a0Caulerpa lentillifera<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/210.57.208.200\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/anggur-laut-1-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-135121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/anggur-laut-1-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/anggur-laut-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/anggur-laut-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/anggur-laut-1-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/anggur-laut-1.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>FPK UNAIR community development\u00a0team\u00a0while diving to look for sea grape species.\u00a0(Personal Doc.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<p>Several other macroalgae species found in this study were red algae species\u00a0<em>Galaxaura sp<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Gigartina sp,<\/em>\u00a0seaweed\u00a0<em>Eucheuma sp<\/em>\u00a0which is commonly used for carrageenan and agar, green algae\u00a0<em>Halimeda sp,<\/em>\u00a0and brown algae\u00a0<em>Sargassum sp.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cThis diversity of macroalgae species indicates that the marine ecosystem on Giliyang Island is still good so that it can support the life of various macroalgae species,\u201d said Veryl.<\/p>\n\n<p>In the dissemination event with the community on Giliyang Island, Veryl explained FPK\u2019s plan to conduct further studies and study the sites\u2019 feasibility for sea grape cultivation. He and his team will work on producing and distributing sea grapes on Giliyang Island.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cFPK UNAIR will regularly send students and teams every four to six months to do further research,\u201d he said.
