Airlangga Essay Academy 2022 held the Airlangga Writing Education (AWE 2022) webinar: “How Important is Essay Writing Knowledge in Supporting The SDGs Program”. This webinar was held on Sunday, August 21, 2022 online and invited Sri Yayu Ninglasari, SE, MSEI as a speaker.

An essay, as presented by Sri, which has often been heard by ordinary people, is a written work passing the author’s point of view on a certain topic to convince the reader of the ideas put forward, such as arguments. “Essays are important for students to improve understanding that can be analyzed to generate critical thinking, as well as develop writing capacity,” she explained.

Not only argumentative essays, but there are also many other types of essays, such as comparative, expository, and narrative essays. The different contexts of the essay are what the name implies, such as to expose an argument, compare something, explain a process, or describe general things as entertainment.

“The basic structure of an essay is an introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction contains an overview to the reader about the context, the body discusses the evidence in more detail so that the reader accepts the author’s point of view, and the conclusion as a unifying summary of the previous sections, “explained Sri.

Ideally, Sri continued, the introduction contains 10%, the body contains 80%, and the conclusion is 10% of the overall content of the essay. She suggests following this percentage so that the essay can be optimal with complete essence of the essay.

In addition to optimizing the essay in terms of structure, context is also the main thing that should be optimized. “To be a good essay, there must be strong and appropriate supporting evidence, include arguments accompanied by discussions of other perspectives, then conclude briefly, and don’t forget to write citations from reliable sources,” Sri explained.

In fact, knowledge of essays can support the SDGs (The Sustainable Development Goals) program that is being promoted by the world. SDGs refer to 17 areas and 169 targets often used as essay writing themes.

“The published essays will be used as consideration or knowledge for stakeholders, such as policymakers, the government, and so on,” ended Sri.
