Discrimination violates a person\u2019s human rights, including for people living with HIV\/AIDS (PLWH). The Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) states that PLHIV has an equal right to access services and facilities as the others (Headley et al., 2019). Nonetheless, discrimination is still widely practiced due to the community\u2019s stigma that the patients may transmit HIV. Therefore, people with HIV are likely to be avoided. Discrimination in society makes it difficult for PLWH to find work and access health and education services. Family, being the closest people with PLWH, should provide a full-support and comfort for them. However, a lot of people are embarrassed by the PLWH in the family, driving them to keep the condition undisclosed. Stigma and discrimination around families are rooted in the general lack of education and understanding. In 2018, the number of PLWHs in Indonesia reached 640,000, with 38,000 death cases due to HIV. The number increased by 60 percent since 2010. PLWH in Indonesia still experiences a fairly high level of discrimination. Around 40-50 percent of PLWH are discriminated against in the community and 67-68 percent are discriminated against by family and the closest people. According to the 2017 Indonesian Demographic Health Survey (IDHS), in the age range of 15\u201354 years, the attitude that indicates discrimination by the family is 72.1 percent and 53.95 percent of young females.<\/p>\n\n
To tackle and cut down discrimination against PLWH, the Indonesian government has promoted health using mass media to target the wider community and government agencies; it aims to empower PLWH within their communities and encourage all community members to not discriminate against PLHIV in health services, education, employment, and in general. Studies reported that family support is highly necessary for overcoming stigma and discrimination against ODHA. Studies in Indonesia on the factors related to discrimination against PLWH have been conducted in the general context but not specifically in the family context. Therefore, the study analyzes the discriminatory attitude toward PLWH in the family context using socio-economic factors and information sources in Indonesia, specifically, whether Indonesians get their information from the internet, radio, newspaper or magazines, television, health professions, community meetings, seminars or counseling, or school and teachers, have not previously been examined in research in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n
People with more access to information are less likely to have a discriminatory attitude toward PLWH. It was also found that women are less likely to have a familial discriminatory attitude toward PLWH compared to men. Young people, with lower education access [not more than middle school], are more likely to have a familial discriminatory attitude toward PLWH compared to older people with higher education. This finding correlates with the level of knowledge and information access. It was also found that people living in rural areas are less likely than those in urban areas to have a familial discriminatory attitude toward PLWH. The study found that the younger the age and the lower the educational level of the respondent, the more likely they were to have a familial discriminatory attitude. The government may consider these factors when making policies to tackle familial discrimination faced by PLWH. In particular, education on HIV and AIDS should be promoted.<\/p>\n\n
