{"id":233017,"date":"2023-08-31T16:43:26","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T09:43:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/unair-rector-responds-to-new-thesis-obligation-removal-policy\/"},"modified":"2023-09-01T11:28:23","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T04:28:23","slug":"unair-rector-responds-to-new-thesis-obligation-removal-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/en\/unair-rector-responds-to-new-thesis-obligation-removal-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"UNAIR Rector responds to new thesis obligation removal policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>UNAIR NEWS \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Nadiem Makarim has issued several new policies, including removing the thesis obligation.\u00a0This policy is introduced in Permendikbudristek No.53 of 2023.<\/p>\n\n<p>Rector\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unair.ac.id\/en\/\">of Airlangga University (UNAIR)<\/a>\u00a0gave a response on this matter.\u00a0Prof Dr Mohammad Nasih SE MT Ak, said that UNAIR embraced this new policy.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cIn this regard, we (UNAIR, ed) welcomes this policy positively.\u00a0\u201cStudents can complete their studies according to their\u00a0passion\u00a0and expertise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof. Nasih explained that this policy does not remove the existence of theses. \u201cNot removing the thesis entirely but providing other options. So now thesis is not the only way, but there are other ways,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n<p>The new policy says that apart from the thesis, other options exist, such as prototypes, projects and equivalent final assignments.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/feb.unair.ac.id\/\">The Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business<\/a>\u00a0said that students have the freedom to choose their own graduation path.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe thesis will still be there, students have other choices, like a project,\u00a0a prototype, go ahead.\u00a0Moreover, we have also provided ample space for students to graduate from any path,\u201d said Prof Nasih.\u00a0UNAIR has implemented another alternative to thesis for graduation requirement, which is an achievement at the National Student Science Week (Pimnas).<\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color\"><strong>Maintain originality<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>Nevertheless, Prof. Nasih explained that\u00a0students\u2019 prototypes and projects must always have a narrative and not plagiarize other people\u2019s work.\u00a0\u201cWhatever the product, there must be a narrative, description and explanation.\u00a0Originality is non-negotiable.\u00a0You can\u2019t plagiarize other people\u2019s work,\u201d he explained.\u00a0Mechanisms for standardizing the originality of works need to be prepared to support this new policy.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cUniversities and study programs can determine the mechanism for standardizing originality. If the thesis has a statement letter. However, if it is a product, there must be a test first,\u201d he explained regarding the thesis obligation removal policy.<\/p>\n\n<p>Prof. Nasih added that in maintaining originality, at least a statement and commitment must be written that if it is proven otherwise, that they have committed plagiarism, they are willing to be punished. The product must also be validly tested to ensure that it conforms to the existing standards.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cSo, for example, the work that students produce can be a substitute for fuel, then when tested, the results must be valid,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n<p>Regarding theses and dissertations that are not required to be published, according to Prof. Nasih, the way to test their originality is by publishing them.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThe most appropriate form to test the originality of theses and dissertations is to publish them. So we have to publish it so that people can evaluate it. It\u2019s just that the form can be different from what previously existed,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n<p>Meanwhile, UNAIR is currently working on a thesis exam scheme to improve graduates\u2019 quality by presenting practitioners in their fields. UNAIR plans to implement this scheme next year.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a thesis is examined, it will not only be lecturers who test it but also practitioners. Students are assessed on how they answer, how they communicate, and so on. This aims to train them before going to work,\u201c he concluded.
