UNAIR NEWS<\/strong> \u2013 Every student aspires to study at <\/span>one of <\/span>the top <\/span>universities<\/span>. Through the IISMA program, Chau Yu An, a student from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine<\/a> 51动漫<\/a> gains a learning experience at the University of Edinburgh. She pursued studies in Scotland from September 7 to December 28, 2023.<\/p>\n\n

Yuan chose the University of Edinburgh due to its prestigious <\/span>global reputation<\/span>.<\/span> \u201cThe University of Edinburgh is among the world\u2019s top universities, ranking in the top 15 according to the QS World University Rankings 2023. It\u2019s<\/span> known<\/span> for <\/span>its<\/span> strong academic reputation<\/span> and<\/span> sustainability <\/span>initiatives<\/span>,<\/span> and<\/span> boasts a diverse international student of <\/span>more than<\/span> 17,000. Furthermore, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine holds the 8th position in the QS World University Rankings 2023 for Veterinary Science<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n

She once participated in the online program held by the University of Edinburgh through Coursera, which she deemed insightful. That\u2019s what convinced Yuan to apply to The University of Edinburgh for the IISMA program.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cBesides, Edinburgh is an incredibly beautiful city. It has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1995. This city combines historical buildings, natural attractions, and modern technology. I hope to witness the beauty of this historic city,\u201d she told UNAIR NEWS.<\/p>\n\n

Exploring various activities<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

Yuan participated in two learning systems, including lecture class and tutorial. The lecture class does not necessarily require student\u2019s attendance. It is also available on the university\u2019s site. On the other hand, a tutorial is an intensive discussion session with a tutor, in which attendance and participation are mandatory for all students.<\/p>\n\n

The University of Edinburgh offers various student activities known as societies. These encompass 300 different fields including sports, cultural interests, hobbies, research, environmental conservation, and more. Yuan has participated in several activities such as gliding, pony trekking, and horse riding.<\/p>\n\n

The University of Edinburgh also offers the \u2018Engage in Scotland\u2019 program, where students explore Scotland with specific thematic tasks. Yuan and her group volunteered at a local garden that produces cost-effective and organic fruits and vegetables. They interacted with the local community and presented their findings from the visit as well.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cIt was a valuable experience. The garden relies on volunteers instead of employing too many staff members. They also use natural fertilizers,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n

Outside the class, Yuan volunteered in the charity shop and took part in \u2018Brews and Brushes\u2019. The program promotes coffee and Indonesian batik to international students. She was also chosen as the student ambassador at the London Vet Show 2023, which was held for two days. The show was attended by international vets, manufacturers of medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and animal feed.<\/p>\n\n

Broadening horizons<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

\u201cThe IISMA program has allowed me to expand my knowledge beyond my field of study. I\u2019ve learned more about economics, the environment, and future challenges. Outside of campus, I\u2019ve also been able to engage in activities related to veterinary medicine and observe animal care in Scotland and England,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n

Apart from the academic benefits, the IISMA program also offers the opportunity to make new friends and establish connections. \u201cI\u2019ve learned to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, not just in academic settings but also within a broader social context,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n

After joining IISMA, Yuan hoped to gain extensive global insights, valuable knowledge, and connections. She planned to apply the experiences within the local context in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cThe knowledge I\u2019ve acquired in fields like economics and environmental health is highly relevant on a daily basis. The knowledge will help me get through the professional world in the future. Besides, the knowledge of veterinary training is invaluable as it expands my options for internships in the field,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n
