UNAIR NEWS<\/strong> – The Research <\/a><\/span>Center<\/span> for Patient Safety (PRKP) <\/span>of<\/span> Universitas <\/span>Airlangga<\/span><\/a> (UNAIR) held <\/span>a <\/span>webinar<\/span> series<\/span>,<\/span> \u201c<\/span>Visiting Researcher Programme<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span> In this <\/span>webina<\/span>r<\/span> series<\/span>, several sub-themes were discussed, including <\/span>\u201cSix <\/span>Patient Safety Targets for Nursing Students<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span> Ns <\/span>Annisa<\/span> Rahmi<\/span> Galleryzki<\/span> SKep<\/span> MKep<\/span>, a lecturer from the <\/span>Kepanjen<\/span> Health Sciences College (STIKES), was<\/span> featured as<\/span> the speaker <\/span>at<\/span> the event on <\/span>Tuesday<\/span>, Jan 26, 2024.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n

Ns Annisa emphasized the role of nurses in achieving the six patient safety targets, which is a crucial issue as patient safety incidents still occur frequently worldwide. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cThere are 134 million injury incidents occur in communities of lower to middle-income countries. However, a safety incident is something that can be prevented. Therefore, we are striving to prevent these safety incidents,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n

One of the preventive measures for safety incidents is active participation in patient safety education. She also urged nursing students to acquire competencies equivalent to those of working nurses. <\/p>\n\n

\u201cMany incidents occur due to errors made by students. According to data, about 28 to 30 percent of students still make mistakes in administering medications,\u201d said Ns Annisa. <\/p>\n\n

\"The<\/figure>\n\n

Six Patient Safety Targets<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/h4>\n\n

In the healthcare sector, Ns Annisa emphasized the importance of six patient safety goals that healthcare professionals, especially nurses, need to prioritize. These goals include: \n<\/span>(1) Patient identification; \n(2) Improve<\/span>ment of<\/span> effective communication; \n(3) Increased a<\/span>wareness of<\/span> high-alert medications; \n(4) <\/span>Correct<\/span> patient, <\/span>c<\/span>orrect <\/span>location, <\/span>correct <\/span>procedure, and <\/span>correct <\/span>surgical action; \n(5) Prevention of infection risks; \n(6) Prevention of<\/span> falling<\/span> injury.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cAs nurses, you play an important part in addressing these issues because we are always by the patient\u2019s side. In the event of an incident, the nurse is the one sought after,\u201d said Ns Annisa. <\/p>\n\n

HAIs<\/span><\/span> Prevention<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/h4>\n\n

One of the patient safety targets is the prevention of infections. Infections in patients often occur due to Health <\/span>Care-Associated<\/span> Infections (HAIs). HAIs occur while patients receive care in hospitals or other healthcare services.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n

Therefore,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>prevention <\/span>according to<\/span> standard precautionary measures <\/span>is<\/span> needed<\/span>. These<\/span> include:(1) handwashing,(2) <\/span>proper <\/span>use of personal protective equipment (PPE),(3) respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette,(4) the use of safe syringes,(5) storage and handling of <\/span>medications<\/span>, and(6) cleaning and disinfecting equipment and environmental surfaces.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/p>\n\n

\u201cBy properly washing our hands, we can break the chain of infection that may be transmitted by patients or ourselves,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n

Why is hand hygiene the most important? She conveyed that this is not only an effort to protect patients but also to protect health workers. <\/p>\n\n
