UNAIR NEWS<\/strong> \u2013 Universitas <\/a><\/span>Airlangga<\/span>, in collaboration with UNICEF Indonesia<\/a> through <\/span>Geliat<\/span> Airlangga<\/span><\/a> (Maternal and Child Health Care Movement), has launched a program to <\/span>accompany<\/span> pregnant mothers. A total of 1,134 students from 28 universities in East Java were officially dispatched to 8 regencies\/cities to support the program. These areas include Surabaya, <\/span>Jember<\/span>, <\/span>Jombang<\/span>, Kediri, <\/span>Probolinggo<\/span>, <\/span>Pamekasan<\/span>, <\/span>Banyuwangi<\/span>, and <\/span>Blitar<\/span>. The deployment of volunteers was held on Tuesday, Feb 6, 2024, at <\/span>Sriwijaya<\/span> Hall, ASEEC Tower, Campus B <\/span>Dharmawangsa<\/span>, Universitas <\/span>Airlangga<\/span>, Surabaya.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The launching was attended by UNICEF East Java Representative <\/span>Dr.<\/span> Armunanto<\/span> M PH; East Java Health Office Representative <\/span>Dr.<\/span> Waritsah<\/span> Sukarjiyah<\/span> M Kes; the Regional Development Planning Agency of Surabaya (BAPPEDA) Representative Ema Agustina S E; <\/span>Geliat<\/span> Airlangga Representative Prof. <\/span>Dr.<\/span> Nyoman Anita Damayanti <\/span>Drg<\/span> M S; and Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development, Prof. <\/span>Dr.<\/span> Ni Nyoman Tri <\/span>Puspaningsih<\/span> MSi<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\u201cTo build a robust, intelligent, and healthy generation, we need\u00a0healthy mothers. This initiative fosters a collaborative learning environment for both students and expectant mothers. Your participation is important in cultivating a resilient generation by 2030,” said the Vice Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

\"Geliat<\/figure>\n\n

Reducing maternal mortality rates<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n

The attempt to assist moms derives from the high\u00a0maternal and newborn mortality rates. According to Dr. Waritsah, the maternal mortality rate reached\u00a0443 in 2023, while the infant mortality rate will grow from 3,172 to 3,285 fatalities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

A total of 1,854 pregnant women will be <\/span>assisted<\/span> by volunteers. According to <\/span>Dr.<\/span> Waritsah<\/span>, this <\/span>assistance<\/span> will <\/span>monitor<\/span> the condition of pregnant mothers and ensure the birth of healthy, non-stunted children. She hopes there will be no issues between volunteers and pregnant mothers so that maternal and infant mortality rates can be reduced.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Several factors contribute to maternal mortality including postpartum <\/span>haemorrhage<\/span>; preeclampsia (high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine); obesity during pregnancy; complications during the postpartum period; and other problems. Therefore, <\/span>Geliat<\/span> Airlangga<\/span> also provides training or <\/span>capacity<\/span> building to the volunteers.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The materials provided include monitoring, evaluation, and education on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, contraception services, and infants; communication and <\/span>counselling<\/span> using the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) booklet; as well as the concept and implementation of the maternal <\/span>assistance<\/span> program.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n
