Overcoming culture shock in the Land of the Rising Sun

Learning and adapting to a foreign country with a foreign language is not easy; in this regard, Shalsa often experiences culture shock due to the language used and the food found in Japan.

“To overcome the difficulties, I usually try to engage in conversations with them frequently and keep learning Japanese. Regarding food, I usually struggle to differentiate because there are no logos or indicators that the food is halal, so I often choose to cook for myself and buy frozen vegetables for stock,” said the FIB UNAIR student.

The opportunity to be in an international internship is a challenge in itself for Shalsa. For her, students should break limits and never be afraid to try.

“If we don’t try, we won’t know our capabilities. Honestly, I managed to pass this internship program because I just tried it out. So, my message to other friends is to stay motivated. There is no such thing as impossible as long as we are willing to try and make an effort,” she said.

For her, participating in this program is crucial for her future career. Through this program, Shalsa hopes to improve her Japanese language skills and expand her professional network.

Students interested in participating in a similar internship program can visit the Japanology Facebook account and contact the Japanese Studies program admin to obtain the internship registration form. Additionally, JIPA will provide Japanese language interview training with the internship agency.
