Together with an international research team, Dr. Hasan identified Kapuasia falaris, a previously unknown fish species, in the Barito River in Central Kalimantan.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-58face2542026e65d6dc4607a9cef747\"><strong>Cross-national collaboration \u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p>The study, which led to the discovery of this unique fish, was conducted in collaboration with Maurice Kottelat from Switzerland and Lee Kong Chian of the National University of Singapore. The team dedicated approximately a year to research and species identification.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dr. Hasan shared with UNAIR NEWS the critical involvement of local communities in the project. \u201cThis collaboration involved researchers from Singapore and Switzerland. Moreover, the assistance of local residents was crucial in acquiring the fish. During our expedition, local communities helped guide us,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8410612c020c532ed2b60ad66a9922ce\"><strong>Kapuasia falaris discovery<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p>Dr. Hasan further elaborated that the fish was previously unclassified and grouped with similar species. \u201cUpon observation and analysis, we found distinct characteristics that set this fish apart, particularly the prominent white marking on its snout. This feature necessitated its reclassification,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n<p>The fish was officially named Kapuasia falaris on December 2, 2024. Its name derives from Greek, meaning \u2018white nose,\u2019 referencing its most distinctive feature. \u201cThis species stands out because of its solid white snout, unlike related species with patterned noses,\u201d said Dr. Hasan, who is also listed among the World\u2019s Top 2% Scientist 2024 by Stanford University and Elsevier.<\/p>\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2c73cbd213abacc132febc77d5af9450\"><strong>Impact of discovery<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n<p>Kapuasia falaris is found only in specific water systems in Kalimantan, underscoring the ecological uniqueness of its habitat. \u201cThis discovery highlights the critical importance of preserving such ecosystems. The habitat is irreplaceable, and the justification for its protection is strong,\u201d emphasized the aquaculture expert.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dr. Hasan emphasized that this discovery not only enhances biodiversity but also has the potential to influence policies for species protection.<\/p>\n\n<p>\u201cThis fish has already been part of the ornamental fish trade, albeit unnamed. Now that it has been formally identified\u2014essentially given an &#8216;ID&#8217;\u2014we can establish regulations. For instance, it might be prohibited from commercial trade.
