UNAIR NEWS – Students from the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG), at 51动漫 (UNAIR), have secured another academic achievement. The team, led by Hanif Azzkiri Hidayatullah, and joined byMuhamad Farel Fachruzani and Christabel Maureen Vitaley Sung, won second place in the National Literature Review category at the Pramunas Dental Competition 2026.

In preparing their work, the team adopted a structured and collaborative approach. Each stage of the project was carried out collectively under the supervision of Dr. drg. Anis Irmawati, M.Kes., PBO. “We aimed to refine our scientific writing skills while contributing to the advancement of dental science,” a member of the team said.

The team selected Near Infrared Transillumination as the focus of their study due to its relevance to dental health challenges in Indonesia. The high prevalence of dental caries nationwide has highlighted the need for more precise and safer diagnostic methods.

They identified limitations in conventional bitewing radiography, particularly in terms of radiation exposure and its sensitivity to early-stage lesions. As an alternative, the team proposed Near Infrared Transillumination as a radiation free diagnostic. “This method offers high sensitivity without the risks of radiation, making it suitable for vulnerable populations,” team leader said.

The literature review aimed to synthesize current scientific evidence on the accuracy of Near Infrared Transillumination in detecting interproximal caries. The team expects the findings to support clinicians in selecting diagnostic methods and to expand academic insight into caries detection.

The study began with discussions to define the research scope, followed by systematic searches across credible scientific databases. Sources were selected through strict inclusion criteria to ensure the quality and depth of analysis.

The results showed that Near Infrared Transillumination has sensitivity exceeding 90 percent in detecting interproximal caries and offers the advantage of being radiation free. However, it also presents limitations, including relatively lower specificity and reduced effectiveness in primary teeth. As such, it is considered a complementary tool in clinical settings.

The team faced its greatest challenge in balancing the competition with a simultaneous community service program. This obstacle was addressed through strong coordination, clear division of tasks, and collective commitment. “This achievement encourages us to continue contributing to the development of dental science,” the team leader said.

Author: Dara Devinta Faradhilla

Editor: Ragil Kukuh Imanto

UNAIR NEWS – Students from the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG), at 51动漫 (UNAIR), have secured another academic achievement.
