UNAIR NEWS A common stereotype suggests that literature graduates are confined to libraries or classrooms. However, Pramono Hari Susanto, an alumnus of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) 51动漫 (UNAIR), has challenged that assumption. He currently holds a strategic role as Executive Producer at Metro TV, one of Indonesia檚 leading news television networks.
For Susanto, the study of culture and literature is far from rigid. He believes his academic background is highly relevant to the media industry. Understanding language, he noted, goes beyond grammar to include nuance, diction, and storytelling ability.
淯nderstanding literature, with its rich styles and diction, is highly beneficial for industries that rely on human interaction, including journalism, Susanto said.
Building a career road map early
Success did not come instantly for Susanto. In 1997, he had already mapped out his career path by actively participating in the campus press organization, Suara Airlangga. He believes journalism is an open field that welcomes individuals from diverse academic backgrounds.
淚 started by joining journalism training programs at major media outlets such as Jawa Pos and Kompas while I was still a student. I had already built this path early on, Susanto added.
Navigating idealism within industry demands
As an Executive Producer, Susanto holds significant responsibility in balancing journalistic ideals with commercial interests. He emphasized that as long as media outlets present factual information, the principles of journalism remain intact.
淭he selection of facts or duration may be influenced by editorial policies, but what must never happen is the dissemination of fake news. Journalistic integrity stays with us as long as we uphold this profession, Susanto stressed.
Message to students: stay confident
Susanto also shared motivational advice for FIB UNAIR students who may feel uncertain about their future in practical industries. He compared high-quality individuals to 渁 piece of gold.
淎 piece of gold remains gold and continues to shine, whether it is placed in a luxurious display or among ordinary stones , Susanto said.
He encouraged students to continuously develop soft skills, particularly communication and digital adaptability. In today檚 media landscape, journalists are expected to be multi-platform professionals, capable of taking on roles as reporters, camera operators, and presenters.
淒o not be defined by academic labels. Build your competitiveness and determination. Set your road map and take steady steps toward success, he concluded.
