Flying to Taiwan, FF UNAIR Students Conduct Research at National Chiayi University for 3 Months

FF UNAIR student at National Chiayi University

As a Faculty of Pharmacy with a reputation at the global level, of course the Faculty of Pharmacy, Airlangga University (FF UNAIR) collaborates with many universities in the world. One of the universities that has good relations with FF UNAIR is National Chiayi University, Taiwan.

FF UNAIR and National Chiayi University (NCYU) have often carried out collaborations in the fields of education and research. Student outbound activities are also one of the activities that shows the strong collaboration between the two.

In the last few years, every year FF UNAIR has routinely sent students to carry out research at NCYU’s Department of Biochemical Science and Technology. The implementation of this student research is fully supported through the FF UNAIR Student Outbound program and the Taiwan Experience Education Program (TEEP) by the Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE).

The students who departed recently were Ave Rahman, a Master of Pharmaceutical Sciences student class of 2023 and Nurul Fathin Athirah binti Md Noor, an undergraduate student class of 2021. They have undertaken research activities for three months at NCYU from 21 October 2024 to 15 January 2025. Both students carried out research on the development of ingredients as anti-aging and whitening agents from natural Indonesian ingredients.

Ave and Fathin said that they conducted their research using in vitro methods, namely by culturing skin fibroblast cells and melanoma cells. Fibroblast cell culture is used as an anti-aging research model with a mechanism for repairing cells damaged by internal and external factors. Meanwhile, melanoma cell culture has become a research model for lightening agents through the mechanism of inhibiting the melanogenesis reaction in the skin. This research will later be used to support Ave’s final thesis and Fathin’s thesis.

By collaborating in this research field, FF UNAIR supports the achievement of SDGs 17, namely Partnership for the Goals. Not only does it increase students’ insight, it is hoped that this research can have a broad impact on science, especially regarding the exploration of the use of natural ingredients in the world of health.
