UNAIR NEWS “ Adolescent development from the positive psychology perspective puts forward the development of a positive self-capacity point of view, rather than focusing on “fixing a problem” in humans. In the context of adolescent development in the positive psychology domain, a stream of perspectives commonly referred to as positive youth development (PYD) have emerged. In its use, PYD became known as the 5C concept, consisting of Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, and Caring/Compassion.

Teachers in schools play a vital role in positive adolescent development. Schools are an important place for their socialization because they spend an average of eight hours in them. Schools are also an important place for them to develop their abilities, because during adolescence, individuals begin trying to develop and form their own identity independently.

Teachers in Malang participated in a community service activity titled Developing Students’ Positive Abilities through 5C (Competence, Confidence, Connection, Character, Caring) Positive Youth Self Capacity Training to introduce, increase, and develop their knowledge of Positive Youth Development (PYD). This program was attended by 59 teachers in Malang, specifically in the Kasembon Sub-district and surrounding areas. The community service was conducted for two days through ZOOM meeting, from October 31 to November 1, 2020. The main speaker in this training was Mr. Ilham Nur Alfian, M.Psi., Psychologist who is an expert in the field of Social Psychology and also Positive Youth Development.

Through this program, teachers in Malang were introduced to Positive Youth Development and the 5C concept for teenagers. According to the Chief Executive of the community service, Ilham Nur Alfian, M.Psi., Psychologist, the 5C concepts in Positive Youth Development (PYD) are indicators that can help teachers discover what their students need to achieve. “The 5C concept on PYD explains that positively developed adolescents have expertise in specific fields, positive confidence, constructive, supportive relationships, positive character, and have sympathy and empathy for others,” said Ilham on October 31, 2020.
