Across Time Sermons

Cak Nur檚 Friday Sermon Note (Illustration: UNAIR NEWS)

UNAIR NEWS听 Captured in this book is late Cak Nur檚 sermon which crosses time. What檚 the proof that his words cross time? Enjoy the compilation entitled 32 Khutbah Jum檃t Cak Nur听(Cak Nur檚 32 Friday Sermons) and feel it檚 relevance to today檚 situation.

The book captures the fun of sermons at Yayasan Waqaf Paramadina in late 90s. The readers imagination will be taken to a cozy study room lectured by a fun lecturer.

Taken daily life as its theme, the graduate of Chicago University felt like he is adapting to the audience. They are not only campus students, but also office workers, roustabouts, and other various professions who are doing Friday prayer there.

Without reading a text, the ex-chairman of PB HMI delivers his knowledge. The sermon檚 topic is simple but fresh. Of course he doesn檛 pick debatable theme famous of him: secularism, liberalism, and pluralism. Because maybe he knows very well that those themes doesn檛 fit to be put up on a short Jumat prayer.

Usually a Jum檃t sermon is general in nature, with repeatable argumentation. There檚 nothing wrong with it. Cak Nur once said, piety messages had to always be spoken, even on daily basis like the beat of the heart. What set Cak Nur檚 sermon with today檚 Islamic missionaries is his reference檚 depth and content variation.

His information completion is original and not cheap. For example, when talking about 淩econciling People with the Same Faith (page 133), he doesn檛 only cite Al Qur檃n surah Al-Hujurat (49) verse 9:听If two groups of believers fight each other, reconcile between them. More than that, he explains about history and muslim group after the Prophet Muhammad died.

There were three groups. First, the heir of Mecca aristocracy, Bani Umayyah, rich and expert in governing/politics. Second, populist/socialists group very pious. They were connected with the Prophet檚 close friends such as Ali bin Abi Thalib, Abu Dzar Al Ghifari, and Salman Al farisi. The third group is the moderate represented by Abu Bakar Shiddiq and Umar Bin Khaththab. They were mediators who owned perfect wisdom.

The three groups were quarrelling. Cak Nur wants to say that differences had been around long ago. Differences are Allah檚 law. People must deal with it with cool head.
