UNAIR NEWS Avian Influenza (AI)virus is still an issue for animal breeders and people in Indonesia and also across the world. Therefore, certain medication to stop or even eradicate the growth of AI virus infecting animals.
The expert in virology from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) 51动漫 Prof. Dr. Suwarno has succeeded in developing two therapeutic medications capable of slowing done the AI virus growth. They are made of yolk extract and called Anti-Hemaglutinin Antibody (AHA) and Anti-Neuraminidase Antibody (ANA).
淭here are two products. I called them AHA and ANA. When the AI virus appeared in Indonesian in 2003, we were moved and it motivated us to develop vaccines and therapy products. AHA and ANA are the products for therapy made of yolk extract, said Suwarno.
The yolk extract is from two groups of infected chicken when they are going to lay eggs. Both groups are vaccinated. First group is injected with hemagglutinin of AI virus while the second group with neuraminidase of the same virus.
After the group lay eggs, researchers extracted the yolk of their eggs. After extracting it, they took the antibodies and conducted protein purification. Hemagglutinin and neuraminidase purification (anti hemaglutinin and anti neuraminidase) is formulated and added with colostrum, some vitamins, minerals and amino acid. That is how AHA and ANA products.
The usage of AHA and ANA is also easy. The therapy is given by spraying into the beak with a milliliter dosage. From his research, if it is given in two days after the infection AHA and ANA will slow down 80 to 100 percent of AI virus growth. Finally, the chickens are safe from the infection.
Both medications have different functions. AHA is used to prevent the AI virus attachment to cells while ANA is used for preventing the AI virus getting out of the infected cells. Both are effective if they are given within two days of infection. More than two days, the therapies should be combined.
淚t is more difficult if the infection is more than two days. Therefore, we combine them. This one (AHA) for preventing the virus attaches to the cell and ANA for preventing them from getting out. If the virus gets out we will catch it with this. Hopefully it doesn檛 attach to the cell. If they replicate, they get out of the host cell and are caught by this (ANA). So we combine both AHA and ANA, said the owner of nine patents.
Research on this yolk extract to cure AI infected chicken was started in 2009. The medications are tested in chicken breeding facility in Blitar, Malang and some other infected areas. From some field tests, there are medium cases, antibodies can hamper the virus growth to 60 percent.
AHA and ANA are specials as they are capable of stopping Highly Pathogenic AI (HPAI) and Low Pathogenic AI (LPAI) Virus. Moreover, they can cure AI virus H5N1, H5N9, and H5N2 infection.
淚f chickens are infected by HPAI they are likely to be dead. HPAI does not show symptoms, but if they are isolated, they are positively infected. Most co-assistant students found the case in labs, added Suwarno who is also a member in Animal Drug Commission of general Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture.
The researcher born in Tuban admitted some companies are interested with his products . But he felt that he still needs to improve the packaging as if they are mass produced, he needs to add more content from each package.
淭he objective is to be more practical. At first, it was made for one, we made it like this in spray. To be more effective, use them with water. In two hours, chicken will drink it down, so principally it works like a vaccination, said Suwarno.
He hoped that through AHA and ANA, the loss caused by pandemic avian flu in Indonesia can be reduced by more effective researches.
