UNAIR NEWS– “Life Is About Completing Each Other.We Must Share, Not Just Love”.It is a quote on a disaster relief aid post by Student Executive Board (BEM) of (UNAIR) about the disaster in Banyuwangi.The disaster was unavoidable.The flash flood happened in the Singojuruh sub-district, Banyuwangi, Juma’t, June 22.As a result, hundreds of homes were damaged.
The flood hit three hamlets, Karang Asem, Garit, and Bangunrejo. It happened due to heavy rain that fell on the slopes of Mount Raung since Thursday, June 21.The torrential rain then caused landslides on the slopes accompanied by fallen trees around the forest.
Reported by CNN Indonesia, Head of Emergency Division of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Banyuwangi Eka Muharam said that there were eleven houses collapsed.In addition, there were 300 families affected.
Meanwhile, Songgon Wagianto, head of the sub-district stated that this disaster was not the first as on May 15, 2018, there was a flash flood as well.
In this regard, through the Ministry of Community Service, BEM in cooperation with UNAIR Disaster Response Student (Mahagana), BEM of all faculties, and KM PSDKU UNAIR collected donations and aid from all students and academic community of UNAIR.The donation will be distributed to the disaster victims in Banyuwangi.Aid collected can be in the form of clothes, furniture, or cash.
After holding the fundraising event in the Secretariat BEM UNAIR, Campus C, Rp 1.5 million was collected.Furthermore, the funds was spent to purchase the basic needs of the victims especially for children.
“We hope that UNAIR students are sensitive to the disaster in this country as it grows social awareness for them.Yesterday we worked with Mahagana, BEM all faculties, and KM PSDKU UNAIR, “said Maulana Satria Aji, minister of community service BEM UNAIR.
“The result, Rp 1.5 million was collected.Then, it will be used for diapers and baby powder and other necessities, “he added.
It should be noted that the floods also resulted in hundreds homeless people.The residents take refuge at the shelter in Village Hall of Alasmalang, Singojuruh Sub-district.(*)
