Most of studies on Ayu Utami檚 novels were conducted from angles of sexuality, gender, and feminism. But Sandra Whilla Mulia found another angle, magical realism. One of Ayu Utami檚 novels with this aspect is Simple Miracles Doa dan Arwah.
淭he novel talked a lot about beliefs, myths, and tradition related to legendary creatures of Java such as pocong and kuntilanak. It is rarely studied, said the Lamongan native. She added that many researchers tend to study magical realism from other countries literary works.
She admitted that to finish her thesis was not an easy task. She had to go back and forth Unair and UGM to look for suitable references. But her hardwork was finally paid off and it boosted her GPA at 3.84 and named as the best graduate of the Faculty of Humanities (FIB) master program last graduation.
