UNAIR NEWS The high cases of diabetes mellitus (DM) in Indonesia encourage Devyani Diah Wulansari, attempt finding an alternative medicine. Devyani utilize papaya seed extract (Carica papaya Linn) in an attempt to discover the medicinal properties of plants in our nature.
The Pasuruan-born women on July 9, 1988 is motivated to seek alternative treatment of diabetes millitus by using natural ingredients from plants that a lot of them being cultivated in Indonesia.
Therefore Devyani choose to use the seeds of papaya fruit that recognized as useless goods. However, after she observed it, it contains medicine content and remarkable benefits. Through her observation, she wrote it into a thesis of her master program (S2) on Basic Medical Sciences of Faculty of Medicine UNAIR, and awarded as best graduates with a GPA of 3.81.
Devyani is interested to explore the properties of papaya seed extract and apply it to her thesis research entitled “The Effect of Papaya Seed Extract on Glucose Transporter Level 4 (GLUT4) of Rat Muscle Tissue Hyperglycemia”. In order to prove it, the process was not simple.
淲hile observe it, the hardest thing is to induce the laboratory rat to get diabetes for long time, because it only use fructose, Devyani said
During her study, the mother of one child got her busy time. Studying while working and also managing the family, it took more energy. It made Devyany lost her sleep hours to study.
淎ccording to me, the most effective time to study is in the middle of the night. Besides, the physic and thought fresher after taking a nap for a while before. I also did that with night prayer,
