UNAIR NEWS “In commemorating national education day, there was something unusual happening in Kapas Krampung cemetery, Surabaya.A flag hoisting ceremony was held in Kapas Krampung cemetery.Solemnly, dozens of children participated.
On Wednesday, May 2, the ceremony took place and most of the participants were children aged 10-12.National anthem was sung solemnly and the ranks were well-organized until the ceremony was over.Hope was radiated from the faces of the children.
These children, though living around the cemetery, also have a passion in achieving their goals and hopes.They also have the right to education.
After the flag hoisting ceremony, there was a health education from Faculty of Public Health (FKM) team 51¶¯Âþ (UNAIR).This time, the research team conducted health education on Handwashing with Soap (CTPS).Education was given through a puppet show, a 6 step CTPS movement, and a cartoon banner that kids love.
In addition to lecturers, the students of the Community Empowerment Program Department of Health Promotion (Promkes) and Behavioral Science also participated.This activity educating children around this cemetery has been running for a month.
“The program is not only counseling.Education and entertainment are the appropriate health promotion strategies for the development of children nowadays, ” said Pulung Siswantara, S.KM, M.Kes, one of the supervising lecturers.

Beside Pulung, there was also Riris Diana Rachmayanti, S.KM, and Muthmainnah in the team.They are currently developing Edutaiment (Educational and Entertaiment) media in order to realize healthy, smart and quality generation.
The health education was followed enthusiastically.To detect the effectiveness, the team also held a quiz.The children were asked to step forward to demonstrate the 6-step CTPS movement.As a result, most participants were able to understand the importance of handwashing with soap.
In its development, the program is tailored to the needs of the target.Education is provided through entertainment favored by children.“It’s good this way, not boring,” said one of the kids while enjoying the puppet show.
The highlight of the event was the writing of the ideals of each child.The team handed out paper and balloons.Then, each child is asked to write their dreams and hopes on paper.The paper is then wrapped around a flying balloon strap.
The children looked very enthusiastic, some want to be doctors, teachers, ustadz, pilots, and many more.The research team conveyed the message to the children and also their companions to instill the spirit of learning.After all the children write their dreams, they were asked to go to the middle of the field to fly balloons simultaneously.
Although the community service have been completed, the team plans to continue the activity regularly.Hopefully, there is an opportunity for children who have not gone to school to get access to the same education.
All children living in the cemetary area also have access to health education. hope Hopefully there will be healthy, intelligent, and quality generation in all levels of society.(*)
