UNAIR NEWS Indonesia檚 Independence Day remains a sacred occasion celebrated nationwide each year, and (UNAIR) is no exception. To mark the country檚 80th Independence Day, UNAIR held a flag-hoisting ceremony that was both solemn and lively.
The ceremony was staged at UNAIR檚 rectorate courtyard on the MERR-C campus, Sunday (Aug. 17, 2025). Alongside students, faculty, and university staff, the event also drew many international students eager to experience the patriotic spirit firsthand.
Among the participants were students from the AUN Summer Camp: Airlangga Adventure (AIRVENTURE) 2025, a program organized in partnership with the ASEAN University Network (AUN) under the theme Protecting Marine Biodiversity.
Patriotism and dignity
Three students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM)擜dam Harris, Kai, and Izzatul攕hared their impressions of Indonesia檚 traditions. They noted that the ceremony at UNAIR stood out for its scale and energy, with each faculty represented in the procession. To them, this display reflected the discipline and unity of the student body.
淭he ceremony here carries a strong sense of dignity, especially with the pledges and the proclamation. It feels like a retelling of Indonesia檚 history and the mandate passed down by its founders. What struck me most was the flag-hoisting unit攖heir synchronized march was impressive and truly embodied patriotism, said Adam.
Kai added that he was particularly drawn to Indonesia檚 batik tradition, prominently showcased during the event. 淚 was amazed to see how Indonesians proudly wear and preserve their batik. It檚 inspiring to see cultural heritage embraced in daily life, he said.
New friendships, new cultures
Also in attendance were Huoth David and Tan from Cambodia. Because AIRVENTURE is run in collaboration with AUN, they were able to connect with peers from across ASEAN nations who also joined the program.
For both Huoth and Tan, the trip marked their first student exchange experience. Taking part in a national celebration such as Independence Day, they said, added special meaning to their visit.
淭hrough AIRVENTURE, I檝e gained so many new experiences. I explored Surabaya, discovered UNAIR檚 different campuses, and met students from a wide range of cultural backgrounds across ASEAN, Huoth said.
They expressed joy in being able to participate in the ceremony itself. 淚 am very excited, and it檚 an honor to be part of this celebration. More than anything, we檙e impressed by the diversity of friends and cultures we encountered, all reflected in this flag-raising ceremony, Tan concluded.
