UNAIR NEWS “ Josephine Iris Alexandra, an International Relations student at 51¶¯Âþ (), had the opportunity to study at Australia National University through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program. This prestigious program offers Indonesian students the chance to study at esteemed international universities for one semester.
Alexandra explained that she chose Australia National University for several reasons. First, she was drawn to its global prestige as one of the world™s top universities. Second, the university boasts a large and diverse international student community.
She hopes that studying at Australia National University will allow her to make new friends and broaden her perspectives by engaging with students from around the world. Additionally, she expected the university to support her academically, especially in conducting research for her thesis.
Preparing for IISMA
Alexandra admitted that she did not have a set timeline for preparing for IISMA. She believes that her entire academic journey at UNAIR has been a valuable, long-term process.
Nevertheless, she had specific strategies for the ELPT test, essay, and interview. Alexandra dedicated a week before each test to preparation and reflection to achieve the best possible results.
“I focused on learning about the university™s background and fun facts, exploring its history and distinguished alumni. Additionally, I connected my studies at Australia National University with its potential contributions to the Indonesian community, creating a plan for giving back upon my return,” Alexandra explained.

Effective time management
Furthermore, as a student at UNAIR™s Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP), she consistently balanced her academic and extracurricular activities, maintaining a GPA above 3.5. Effective time management allowed Alexandra to pass the IISMA selection process without neglecting her studies in International Relations.
“My advice for balancing all activities is to always be mindful that what we do now will impact our future decisions,” said Alexandra.
Additionally, Alexandra stressed the importance of having the courage to try, even if it means facing potential failure. She believes that the opportunity to try is an advantage in shaping a better future.
“Having a ‘nothing to lose’ mentality helps boost confidence. Failing doesn™t mean you™re worthless. Many factors influence outcomes,” Alexandra remarked.
