UNAIR NEWS The Faculty of Health Sciences Medicine and Natural Sciences () at 51动漫 reported a notable achievement. In 2025, 51动漫 served as the sole Indonesian delegate at Animal Welfare Indonesia International Conference 2025, held at Royal Kuningan Hotel Jakarta on December 10, 2025. The conference brought together leaders scientist檚 practitioners and activists from multiple countries to advance concrete action in animal welfare through research collaboration policy and sustainable innovation.

Under supervision of drh. Amung Logam Saputro M Si, Amalia Sofi, a medical student at FIKKIA, represented 51动漫 by presenting a research paper and scientific poster on exotic animal welfare. Her study examined the practice of dancing monkeys, a traditional performance that remains a source of livelihood in several regions of Indonesia. Participation was a significant milestone for Sofi.

淚 felt the need to speak for animals that have long had no space to be heard. This research was driven by concern over how exotic animals are often treated not as living beings but as tools of entertainment, Sofi said.

AWIIC 2025 was organized by JAAN Domestic Indonesia and FOUR PAWS International and marked the first major conference in Indonesia combining Five Freedoms principles with One Health approach. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung reaffirmed government commitment through Regional Regulation No. 36, 2025 on rabies control prevention of illegal wildlife trade and cross sector collaboration to support development of animal friendly cities.

淚 invite all stakeholders to shape a more sustainable future for the city, Anung said.

In research titled Evaluation of Primate Welfare in Dancing Monkeys Practices: A Study of the Street Entertainment Industry, Sofi analyzed long tailed macaques Macaca fascicularis subjected to chronic confinement, forced training, inadequate nutrition, prolonged stress and restriction of natural social behavior. Conditions not only violated animal welfare principles but also increased zoonotic disease risk and threatened population sustainability, with decline reaching up to 40 percent over the past four decades.

Participation in AWIIC 2025 generated broader impact including international publication opportunities, expansion of PB PDHI FOUR PAWS network and policy recommendations related to harmonization of WOAH/OIE standards.

淚 hope this research becomes a small step toward meaningful change for the welfare of exotic animals in Indonesia, Sofi said.
