Murdoch University explores academic collaboration in visit to UNAIR

UNAIR NEWS (UNAIR) welcomed a delegation from Murdoch University, Australia, in an official visit that also included the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the two institutions. The event was held Tuesday (Aug. 19, 2025) in the Plenary Meeting Room, 4th Floor, UNAIR Management Office, MERR-C Campus.

Among the attendees were Professor Andrew J. Deeks, PhD, Vice-Chancellor and President of Murdoch University, who joined virtually; Professor Tania Urmee, Head of the School of Energy & Engineering; Dr. Ian Wilson, Senior Lecturer at the School of Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences; and David Scholefield, Engagement Partner of the same school.

The MoU signing was witnessed by UNAIR vice rectors along with faculty and unit leaders. In his remarks, UNAIR Rector Prof. Dr. Muhammad Madyan, SE, MSi, MFin, said it was an honor to host both the Consulate General of Surabaya and Murdoch University檚 president.

淲e extend our deepest appreciation to Murdoch University for being a long strategic partner of UNAIR. Over the years, our institutions have built a close and enduring relationship. We are also grateful to the Consulate General of Surabaya for its support in fostering high-quality collaboration, Prof. Madyan said.

Expanding UNAIR揗urdoch partnership

Prof. Madyan and Prof. Jacqueline Lo, Director of the Indo-Pacific Research Gate, formally signed the MoU on behalf of UNAIR and Murdoch University. The agreement is intended to strengthen academic and research cooperation between the two institutions, serving as a framework for future initiatives and demonstrating their long-term commitment.

淭oday marks a key milestone in UNAIR檚 collaboration with Murdoch University. We believe this partnership will not only advance scientific knowledge but also broaden cross-cultural understanding between our two countries, Prof. Madyan said.

Foundation for global collaboration

The agreement allows both universities to exchange expertise across disciplines, build research capacity, and create expanded opportunities for students and faculty to compete on the global stage.

According to Prof. Madyan, the MoU will provide the foundation for more impactful partnerships. Opportunities include joint research, student mobility, academic exchanges, and other collaborative efforts aimed at driving innovation to meet global challenges. 淭hrough collaboration, we can strengthen our potential and deliver meaningful contributions not only to our institutions but also to society, he concluded.

The event closed with a strategic discussion outlining future initiatives, such as WAEJUC engagement, a Dual Award program in Humanities, Arts & Social Sciences, Media & Communication, and Law & Criminology, as well as student mobility and New Colombo Plan activities.
