FH UNAIR Student and Alumni™s Insights on Studying Law in the Netherlands

FH UNAIR on Tuesday (25/10/2022) held a Student Talk titled “Law Student, Are You Ready to Advancing the Rule of Law?” This talk show was held to share the experiences of FH UNAIR academics regarding the experiences and learning methods of law faculties in the Netherlands.

 

IUP-Double Degree Program FH UNAIR student Farani Nazwa C. Irsan was invited to be the first speaker that afternoon. He once studied at Maastricht University. The lecturers there have several setups, ranging from classes in general, self-study, to problem-based learning (PBL) where students are asked to discuss a legal problem. In the beginning, students were given advice on course literature and the schedule for one semester.

 

“Environmentally, classrooms and PBL are safe and engaging because the lecturers also create a relaxed atmosphere. In addition, attendance does not determine the final grade because the class has been recorded and provided to all students. So, students can set their way of learning, whether they want to self-study or come to class. Students who come can also be more engaged,” said the 2018 student.

 

FH UNAIR Alumni Annida Aqiila Putri then attended as the second speaker. Currently, she is pursuing a master degree at Utrecht University. Annida explained that the atmosphere of academic freedom at the university was much more felt and institutionalized. Students are encouraged to be more critical of the literature provided by the lecturer. Not only that, lecturers’ opinions can also be freely criticized there.

 

“The Faculty of Law at Utrecht University does not have a standard methodology that students must follow. We are introduced to many legal methodologies that can be used as a knife to analyze the resolution of a legal problem that exists in society. As a result, the discussion atmosphere in the class is more vibrant,” said the 2017 alumni.

 

The Student Talk that was held that afternoon was also attended by two legal academics from Maastricht University. They are Dr. Sascha Hardt and Assoc. Prof. Fokke Fernhout, and commented on the experiences of the two speakers.
