The session was led by Kurnia Rizqia Ningrum, a Biology student from UNAIR檚 Faculty of Science and Technology (FST).

Ningrum explained that literacy is not merely the ability to read but also the skill to comprehend and analyze information within a book. She underscored its significance in daily life.

淒eveloping a habit of literacy is essential for all of us. It transforms our knowledge, broadens our perspectives, and shapes our character. The type of books we read攚hether fiction or nonfiction攑lays a crucial role in shaping our personality, she remarked.

Tips for cultivating a love for reading

Ningrum went on to share practical strategies for fostering a love for books and literacy. She suggested starting with a book that genuinely interests the reader or fulfills a specific need.

淎 simple way to cultivate a reading habit is to start with a book you love. Choose one that aligns with your interests or needs, and make it your favorite. You don檛 have to overwhelm yourself with stacks of books. By doing this, not only will you gain new knowledge, but you檒l also enhance your ability to interact meaningfully with those around you, she explained.

In the current digital era, Ningrum emphasized that literacy activities can extend beyond physical books. She encouraged students to utilize e-books if printed versions are unavailable and advised them to be disciplined in their reading habits.

淚f you want to start reading but don檛 have access to physical books, you can explore e-books from legitimate sources. Reading e-books is a simple and practical way to improve literacy. However, it檚 crucial to manage distractions from social media攕tay focused and remain consistent, she advised.
