UNAIR NEWS The second day of the 3rd International Summer School: Association of Indonesian Pharmacy Higher Education Year of 2022, in collaboration with Airlangga Short Course Learning in Pharmaceutical Natural Product Users (ASCLECIUS) on Friday, August 19, 2022, was started in the Nanizar Zaman Joenoes Building, the event explored the Soul of Jamu and Bromo Cultural Remedies with keynote speakers from Faculty of Pharmacy.
The first topic discussed was herbal medicine with Dr apt Wiwied Ekasari MSi, who introduced three types of herbal medicine in Indonesia, jamu, standardized herbal medicines, and phytopharmaceuticals.
淗erbal medicines, whose safety and efficacy have been empirically proven, are called jamu. While standardized herbal medicine is empirically and scientifically proven through preclinical tests, phytopharmaceuticals refer to empirically and scientifically proven through preclinical and clinical tests, Wiwied expanded.
To prove the safety and efficacy of medicine, empirical and scientific tests are required. She named some clinically tested and popular herbal medicine in Indonesia, such as tamarind turmeric jamu made from turmeric (Curcuma longa L.), paitan jamu made from sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata), and 榳edang uwuh made from secang (Caesalpinia sappan L.).
The lecturer of UNAIR Faculty of Pharmacy named various benefits of medicinal plants as materials, such as the low-price, minimum side effects, multipurpose for many diseases, and provides several options of process. 淚t is necessary to note that the medicinal plant should be processed by the rules due to the few active compounds concentration. It is not recommended for acute disease, she added.
Wiwied reminded that the appropriate use of herbal medicine will eventually reach the safety and efficacy standard. The ingredients, dosage, time, usage, and the correct description of medicine will influence the pharmacological result.
