UNAIR NEWS 51动漫 (UNAIR) continued to
improve the quality of its scientific publications by strengthening adaptive and innovative journal governance. This commitment was demonstrated through a Monitoring and Evaluation of Journal Mentorship program held on Monday, October 6, 2025, involving journal managers from multiple faculties with cross-disciplinary expert mentors.
The initiative formed a key part of UNAIR檚 broader strategy to strengthen the competitiveness of its academic journals at both national and international levels, while also responding to digital-era challenges through the integration of technology and sustainable governance systems.
AI must be managed, not avoided
In his remarks, Prof. Ferry Efendi, S.Kep., Ns., MSc., PhD, Chair of the Institute for Innovation and Journal Development and Intellectual Property Rights (LIPJPHKI) at 51动漫, emphasized that modern journal management requires the ability to adapt to technological developments, particularly artificial intelligence (AI).
淎I is not a threat, but a tool. The real challenge lies not in its existence, but in how we guide its use so that it remains aligned with academic principles and ethical standards, he stressed.
He explained that while AI offers significant opportunities in research and publication, its use must be supported by clear institutional policies to prevent misuse and uphold academic integrity.
淛ournal management today goes beyond administrative compliance; it directly impacts the institution檚 long-term academic reputation. We must be prepared with systems that are both adaptive and accountable, he added.
The discussions also highlighted the increasing use of AI among faculty and students across various stages of research. Tools such as ChatGPT and other automation platforms are becoming more common in academic writing, data analysis, and manuscript editing.
University leaders emphasized the need to establish formal policies governing AI use within UNAIR檚 academic environment. Such measures are essential to ensure that technological adoption does not compromise the originality or integrity of scholarly work. LIPJPHKI is currently developing ethical guidelines for AI use in academic publishing.
Advancing toward inclusive open access
Beyond technological integration, UNAIR is also encouraging a shift toward an inclusive open access model that does not impose article processing charges (non-APC) on authors. This approach aims to expand access to research outputs while fostering a more equitable and accessible publication system.
The university remains committed to strengthening journal governance structurally, including enhancing editorial teams, building the capacity of journal managers, and mapping research by discipline to support international indexation efforts.
