UNAIR NEWS The World Health Organization檚 statement on the ban on flavored vapes sparks heated discussion in the community. The ban was issued due to the severe impacts of vapes, compared to conventional cigarettes, on respiratory health.
Addressing the issue, dr. Arief Bakhtiar SpP (K) FAPSR, Pulmonologist and Respiratory Medicine expert from the Faculty of Medicine at 51动漫, concurred with the statement.
In an exclusive interview with UNAIR NEWS, dr. Arief stated that initially, vapes were invented to replace conventional cigarettes. At the same time, it was considered safer than traditional cigarettes, both cause similar lung damage and inflammation.
淓ven though the switch from smoke to vapor is considered safer, the lungs can檛 tolerate it. Eventually, it poses serious health risks for humans, too, he said.
Advanced research
The UNAIR alumnus stated that currently, there is no comprehensive research on the impacts of vaping. However, basic research on the impact of vaping on lung organs has been conducted.
The research used mice as a medium to demonstrate the effects of conventional cigarette smoke and vape smoke. Both showed that they cause lung injury and inflammation in mice.
淭hough there hasn檛 been in-depth research yet, it檚 advisable to cut down on the use of cigarettes and vapes. Prevention is better than cure, dr. Arief suggested.
Addiction
Compared to traditional cigarettes, vaping has a higher rate of addiction due to the flavors. Those create pleasurable tastes that lead to addiction.
As a result, vape users become addicted to it. This is contrary to the reasons why vape was invented.
淭here檚 no specific level to determine addiction. When a person is exposed to nicotine, no matter how much, they tend to get hooked, he said.
Teenagers are among those vulnerable to vaping addiction. Typically, at a young age, they are highly curious, prompting them to experiment with cigarettes or vapes. It檚 unfortunate since the young generation should be aware of maintaining respiratory health.
淚 hope that WHO檚 statement will raise the community檚 awareness, especially teenagers, about the importance of lung health. Increase your awareness and keep your lungs healthy, dr. Arief said.
