UNAIR hosts 13th ICAS with conference festival concept

UNAIR NEWS The 13th International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) is set to take place from Sunday, July 28, 2024, to Thursday, August 1, 2024. This prestigious event is one of the largest international conferences in the world. 51动漫 (UNAIR) is honored to host this year’s ICAS.

The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), based in the Netherlands, is a key partner in organizing ICAS. UNAIR introduced 13th ICAS with a press conference on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the ASEEC Tower.

The press conference featured Prof. Dr. Ni Nyoman Tri Puspaningsih, UNAIR’s Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development (RICD); Prof. Philippe Peycam, Director of IIAS; Lina Puryanti PhD, Director of the Airlangga Institute of Indian Ocean Crossroads (AIIOC); Irfan Wahyudi PhD, Secretary of AIIOC; and Lalita Hanwong PhD from Kasetsart University.

Lina Puryanti PhD, Director of AIIOC, emphasized the extensive scope of this event. This is the first time UNAIR and the city of Surabaya to host one of the world檚 largest international conferences. 13th ICAS will adopt a conference festival concept.

淭his international conference stands out because it adopts the Confes (Conference Festival) concept. It檚 not just a conference but also includes workshops and exhibitions. The entire series of events will be held onsite, Lina explained.

More than 1,500 participants and observers from 598 universities and 66 countries will attend this major event. There will be more than 360 panel discussions and roundtables, 17 exhibitions, and 24 workshops on various themes.

The events will be held at eleven locations across Surabaya. Speakers will include academics, practitioners, and activists from around the globe.

Lina invited everyone to participate and enjoy ICAS 13. 淓veryone is welcome to attend and enjoy. It檚 like a global showcase where we can experience creativity from different parts of the world in various spots around Surabaya, she said.

Prof. Nyoman stated that this significant event is part of UNAIR檚 efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 17, which focuses on partnerships for sustainable development.

淭his event will facilitate numerous activities that connect not only among academics but also academics with practitioners. They can discuss and solve problems together, said UNAIR檚 Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation, and Community Development.

Prof. Nyoman hopes that 13th ICAS will expand UNAIR檚 contribution to international networks. 淲e hope the 13th ICAS will enhance UNAIR檚 reputation, contributing not only locally or nationally but as part of the global academic community, she elaborated.

Additionally, the IIAS Director mentioned that Surabaya was chosen as the host of 13th ICAS because of its unique characteristics. Known as the City of Heroes, Surabaya has a rich history and diversity that make it particularly attractive. 淪urabaya has many historic neighborhoods that are very interesting, Prof. Peycam conveyed.

Meanwhile, UNAIR, as a world-class university, has long collaborated with IIAS. According to Prof. Peycam, UNAIR has successfully implemented various projects to achieve sustainable development, making it a suitable partner for collaboration. 淯NAIR has been our (IIAS) partner for a long time. UNAIR has a strong spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration, he stated.
