UNAIR NEWS Brillin Yapply, a student of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences , received an appreciation from the Surabaya mayor. The appreciation was granted for her dedication as an English tutor at the Rumah Bahasa Surabaya for a year, from October 2022 to date.
Brillin said that the voluntary program was initiated by the Surabaya Government and the Surabaya Library and Archives Agency. As a volunteer, she is responsible for teaching English to people with various backgrounds, like students, teachers, and workers.
淚 teach English offline and online regularly, which includes listening, reading, writing, grammar, and such. I also teach English to visitors from other institutions, like the Navy, the student said.
Receiving appreciation on Heroes Day
Brillin is truly grateful upon receiving an appreciation from the Surabaya mayor. She never expected that she would receive the award at the Heroes Day celebration as those were given to recipients with outstanding contributions.
淯nfortunately, I couldn檛 attend the event as I was participating in a student exchange program in Korea. I received the award virtually. However, I檓 forever grateful, she said.

Learning by teaching
Brillin believed that teaching allowed her to spread knowledge to others. Developing English skills itself takes a lengthy process and sacrifices.
It sparked her motivation to spread the knowledge to others. Teaching allows her to see the difficulties people face in learning languages, which pushes her to find the easiest way to learn.
淚 also learn to deliver the material slowly considering that the students have different language proficiency levels. So, I have to present the material well and make it understandable for all students, she stated.
In the end, she hoped that the achievement would inspire others to spread their knowledge inclusively for free. Besides, she also hoped that more people would be more interested and confident in learning English.
淚n the future, I want to find more platforms to contribute more to the country, she added.
