UNAIR NEWS A team of students from (UNAIR) once again secured a notable achievement. Led by Akmal Umara Adli, alongside Bayu Cahyo Bintoro and Felice Kanaya Chandra, the team won 1st place in the Literature Review category at
the Padjadjaran Dentistry Scientific Meeting (PDSM) 2025. The competition, hosted by the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas
Padjadjaran, served as a platform for students to demonstrate the
quality of their scientific research in dentistry.
The accomplishment highlights the team檚 consistency in producing rigorous, well-structured, and evidence-based academic work. It also represents an important stepping stone for their continued research development and future academic careers in dentistry.
Examining periodontal regeneration through meta-analysis
At the competition, the team presented a study titled 淓xploration of Eco-Biomaterial Titanium揚latelet-Rich Fibrin as a Regenerative Therapy for Intrabony Periodontal Defects: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. The study examines the potential of combining regenerative therapies to enhance periodontal tissue repair in intrabony defect cases, using a systematic review and meta-analytic framework.
The team noted that their work stood out not only for demonstrating the effectiveness of combined therapies but also for quantifying the outcomes using effect size. 淭he combined treatment is 2.5 times more effective than using a single agent, the team explained. They also emphasized the transparency of their meta-analysis and the detailed forest plot presentation, which could serve as a reliable evidence-based clinical reference.
Keys to success: thorough preparation and publication goals
The team credited their success to thorough preparation, including anticipating judges questions and practicing responses for various scenarios. They also identified potential limitations in their study, particularly issues related to heterogeneity. 淪uccess in front of the judges comes from a comprehensive grasp of the data and academic integrity, a member said.
Throughout the research process, the team faced both academic and non-academic challenges. Academically, they had to address heterogeneity in their meta-analysis, while non-academically they balanced the project with demanding coursework and final exams.
They managed these challenges through time-blocking strategies and a clear division of tasks, especially in data extraction. The project was supervised by Prof. Dr. Ernie Maduratna Setiawatie, drg., M.Kes., Sp.Perio (K). Looking ahead, the team is currently preparing a manuscript for submission to an international journal, aiming to share their evidence-based findings with the global scientific community.
