UNAIR NEWSZenius, a key player in realizing the dreams of millions of students entering their desired public universities, announced a temporary shutdown of its operations in early 2024. The education technology startup cited operational challenges as the reason behind the closure.Ìý

Zenius had previously undergone a significant downsizing of its workforce during the so-called “bubble burst”. The term refers to an economic growth phase marked by rapid market value escalation, followed by a swift decline. Lina Nugraha Rani SE M SEI, an lecturer at, commented on the closure, stating that it is closely related to business consolidation and synergy to ensure continuity.Ìý

“The impact is significant on workforce unemployment activities. The competition is certainly felt among fellow Education Technology (EdTech) competitors as one diminishes. Still, on the other hand, it serves as a learning experience for EdTech competitors to engage in more effective business management,” she expressed in an interview with UNAIR NEWS.Ìý

Highlighting the importance of risk management, Lina emphasized that employee risk management is integral to a company’s overall management. This process involves identifying, assessing, and handling risks related to human factors within an organization. Regularly assessing employee performance and providing constructive feedback to enhance productivity and reduce risks associated with low performance are crucial aspects.

Managing risks associated with employees can help companies avoid costs that may arise from negative consequences of such risks. Investing in the development and maintenance of high-quality human resources can be a profitable long-term strategy for a company. By having the right workforce, a company can minimize risks and maximize employees’ contributions to organizational success.

Lina expressed regret over the closure of a platform that had been in operation for 20 years. She remains optimistic about the prospects of Zenius employees, who are mostly young individuals with excellent qualities and the ability to navigate challenging aspects of work life. Her insights suggest that employees with e-commerce experience, being accustomed to the dynamic changes in the industry, are better equipped to adapt and find new employment opportunities elsewhere.Ìý

Lina emphasized the need for government support by providing options for the Social Security Agency (BPJS) for employees facing termination. The government should ensure that every terminated worker receives severance pay or compensation. For permanent employees, severance pay is mandatory, while contract workers are entitled to compensation.Ìý

“Undoubtedly, Zenius has absorbed many workers, especially young individuals. They should gather experience and always strive for excellence wherever they go. They must be prepared for the various unavoidable occupational risks and learn the importance of saving their income for emergency funds, ideally amounting to at least six times their monthly salary,” she stated.
