UNAIR NEWS – One of the pharmacy and herbal medicine experts from 51动漫 (UNAIR) is Prof. Dr. Sukardiman, Apt., MS. He has done lots of long researches about quality herbs in Indonesia. One of them, which is now being initiated to be mass produced and sold freely is mangosteen skins and cat檚 whiskers extract concoction. There are two advantages of the concoction: as an anti-diabetes herbal medicine (to reduce blood sugar) and anti-harmful cholesterol.
The Professor of Pharmacy explains, at least there are three approaches to find a specific quality in a plant. Firstly, by performing full screeningto all plants. By doing this, one will know which plant cures what. Secondly, by mapping plants based on their 渇amily. For example, if one plant has a certain quality to cure a certain disease, then other plants of the same family might have the same quality.
The last, which Sukardiman has been doing so far, by way of ethnopharmacy, that is, a way of mapping based on empiric data from society. To be precise, based on Indonesian people檚 habit, which is passed down from generation to generation about a certain quality plant to cure a certain disease. 淚ndonesia must be thankful to God. Local assets and wisdom have made our ancestors found cures for diseases easily. The quality traditional medicines are there for us to enjoy up to this day, he explained.
The abundant natural assets in Indonesia are also potential to make the country excels in the field of herbal medicine. It is not surprising that Health Ministry these days are vehemently executing the program of independent raw material and traditional medicine raw material procurement. Even though, improvement in bureaucracy aspects is also mandatory.
Sukardiman said, herbal medicine production permit must be standardized through a long process. But bureaucracy must not be made complicated either, especially if the people behind the herbal medicine production have been proven to be full of integrity and committed to the nation檚 advancement. On the other hand, supervision towards herbal medicine promotion must also be proportional. Recently, many kinds of people promote herbal medicine on TV, while at the same time their competence is questionable. 淥nce I saw a drop medicine which cures so many diseases. I was wondering, do they even have logic? Does this medicine have enough ingredients? Have the manufacturer done multiple researches and gone through various process? he questioned.
The reason is, when producing herbal medicine, there are three aspects to pay attention to. First, the quality of standardized ingredients, comprehensive research on the ingredients, and where the ingredients are from. Second, the product is guaranteed safe for health. This has to do with the dosage and how long the product can be consumed. Third, the quality of the herbal medicine itself. To witness its quality, long trial stage must be gone through.
Thus, the government must participate in supervising herbal medicines found in the market and which is promoted fiercely in mass media. This has to do with the quality standard and public safety.
Besides extracting mangosteen skins and cat檚 whiskers, Sukardiman has also done researches to other plants. He has proposed many applicative products for people in general, such as composing cancer medication from paniculata (sambiloto), cancer medication from lesser galingale (kencur), diabetes medication from sambiloto and mahogany, sore medication from kencur, and stamina booster from kencur.
Sukardiman is optimistic that Indonesia will become independent in medicine sector as long as there is excellent coordination among relevant institutions. The government must support high-ranking research programs by serious and accurate lecturers or researchers.
Sukardiman is one of the bright lecturers from the Faculty of Pharmacy. He was the Faculty of Pharmacy檚 youngest professor in 2008. The man born in Kebumen has been a member of DIKTI research reviewer since 2010, and Indonesian Health Minister檚 Health Pharmaceutical Instrument and Development Research since 2013. He is also a member of Indonesian Pharmacy Bond IkatanApoteker Indonesia (IAI) since 2010 and was a member of Natural Medicine Ingredients Sector from Indonesia Pharmaceutical Collegium Koligeum IlmuFarmasi Indonesia (KIFI) in 2016. Although he was very busy, he productively writing books and wins patents.
He has won many achievements. For example, in 1999, Sukardiman won the 淵oung Investigator Award from the Asian Microcirculation Specialists. He was also declared Best Presenter of Basic Research Discipline檚 Research Result (IPD) from DIKTI in 2004. (*)
