The death of Prof. Ben leaves a deep grief not only to his family, but also to his fellow doctors especially at the Pulmonary and Respiration Medical Science of FK UNAIR.

Doctor Soedarsono admitted losing one of his best teachers. To him, Prof. Ben is a role model of a favorite teacher with distinction. One of what special about the late professor was his character in transferring knowledge to his students. 淎ny knowledge that he had he would spread it all out to his students. He would give it all away until the students understand, said Soedarsono.

During his life, Prof. Ben actively underwent a numerous researches in the field of lung cancer. Even though the professor was a lung cancer expert, Prof. Ben was in fact an expert of many fields, from pulmonary infection diseases to asthma.

Besides being proficient in many pulmonary cases, Prof. Ben also mastered seven languages, for instance Dutch and French. 淚 don檛 know where he learned to master that many languages. However Prof. Ben was known to be the smartest when he was at college, so it must be easy for him to learn many things. What I know is he often taught himself a lot of things, he said.

As a person who often assisted Prof. Ben in doing a variety of researches, Soedarsono confirms that there are various researches from the late professor which are applicative so that they can be implemented for the good of many.

淎mong them are a research about the procedures on a lung cancer patient; then how to educate the patient, and how to prescribe medicine for chemotherapy. The method Prof. Ben found is still being carried out in our department, he revealed.

Other memories of the late professor were also told by another fellow doctor, Doctor Isnu Pradjoko. Isnu remembers the late professor as a strict character who would not think twice in transferring knowledge.

淗e seemed to be stern and strict, but actually he was very loving to his students. He tried hard to make sure his students inherit all knowledge he had, he recollected.

As a teacher, Prof. Ben was also known to be responsible to educate his students to the max. One of his efforts was doing a weekly evaluation with medical specialist candidates or even interns.

淎濒濒 in a room to report all minor and major cases they had been dealing with, Isnu said.

That way Prof. Ben was benefited to evaluate how far the performance of his students was in dealing with patients. 淚f they are wrong, well, he would be outright about that. If they don檛 understand the right service procedure yet, he would ask them to learn about it again and again. He was strict, but the effect was wonderful to the development of his students, he remembered.

The contribution of Prof. Ben to palliative system implemented to lung cancer patients is not small. For the sake of lung cancer patients, Prof. Ben then took an additional study at Murdoch University (MURDOCH) after being awarded a professor to learn palliative science further.

淧rof. Ben was motivated to promote palliative efforts to ease the pain of pulmonary patients who generally are already in chronic state, Isnu explained.

Prof. Ben also proved his love of knowledge by doing a lot of researches. Most of his researches were published in journals of national and international level.

淚t is no wonder that after Prof. Ben is gone, there are piles of research journals which aren檛 being organized yet. This is what a Prof. Ben檚 big dream is, to compile all his researches in a book, he said.

To make the late professor檚 dream come true his family, assisted by colleagues at the Pulmonary and Respiration Medical Science of FK UNAIR, is trying to collect all his research data, whether it is in soft copy or hard copy.

淏ecause there are no more doctors in the family, we (colleagues) will try to help. Before he was ill, little by little he had collected a few data archives. The plan is after all is compiled in a book, we will hand it over to FK UNAIR and UNAIR, he revealed.

Death is in fact in God檚 hand. Isnu wishes that a Prof. Benjamin檚 scholarly spirit will be continued by his descendants. 淏esides being very good at education, Prof. Ben also loved culinary art. When abroad, he could show us any restaurant which cooks good and kosher food, he recollected. (*)
