UNAIR NEWS Faculty of Law 51动漫 held a community service on July 22-23 淔air Trade Certification Counsel for Ijen Coffee Farmers. The community service was held as a part of Higher Education Tri Dharma which is to implement the science and bring benefits, values and improve the people prosperity.
At the moment, the demand on coffee improves globally and Indonesia is the fourth biggest exporting country in the world. But the high demand is not followed with the prosperity of the coffee farmers. It was stated by the Head of International Law Department, Iman Prihandono, Ph.D.
One of the mechanisms which gives alternative solution to the farmers prosperity is through Fair Trade certification. Based on the data of Fair Trade International, there are at least 25 million smallholders farmers producing 70-80% of total coffee production in the world.
淚t means the small scale farmers should have great positioning in the chain of production and sales of global coffee commodity, said Iman.
He said that Fair Trade exists to give benefits to small scale farmers at least for three things. First, to make sure the farmers get reasonable price which can cover the average and production cost. Second, to facilitate partnership and give opportunity to the farmers to have control in the trade. Third, to standardize production and sales which is responsible socially, fair economically and to preserve the environment.
Unfortunately, the number of small scale coffee farmers certified in Indonesia is limited. At the moment, 80% coffee certified Fair Trade is from South America, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Nicaragua and Costa Rica.
淭herefore, Department of International Law supported and gave counsel to Ijen coffee farmers to get the Fair Trade certification. Through this certification, the farmers will not only get good price, but the production also can be accounted for socially, fair and environmentally friendly, said the lecturer of FH UNAIR.
In this occasion, I Wayan Titib Sulaksana, S.H., M.H., Senior lecturer of International Relations Department also emphasized that to get Fair Trade certificate, the farmers must unite to a strong and solid organization.
One of the farmers said that they have submitted for Fair Trade certification, but there is no solid organization yet and the process is long. Therefore, the counsel can be continued until they get certification. (*)
