Indonesian Midwifery Education Association Transforms the Midwife Education Curriculum

UNAIR NEWS –The Indonesian Midwifery Education Association (AIPKIND) is continuously improving the midwife’s education curriculum in Indonesia. There is a great hope on more qualified midwives to answer the global challenge.

It was conveyed by the Head of Central AIPKIND Dra.Jumiarni Ilyas, M.Kes in the IndonesianMidwifery Curriculum Workshop. The event took place atAirlangga Medical Education Center(AMEC) Faculty of Medicine, 51动漫.

The event was followed by 44 participants from 17 midwifery educational institutions in Indonesia.Dr.Kim Russell of theDivision of Midwifery – The University of Nottingham was invited as a speaker at the event.

In the event, Jumiarni said that her institution is currently transforming the midwife’s education curriculum system from vocational to professional academy.Remember, the education of midwives in Indonesia is majority in the form of vocational studies, while the professional education was only pioneered in 2008.

“The transformation from vocational education to the professional one requires a change in the concept of thinking, considering the two are very different,” she said.

The difference, according to Jumiarni, lies in the quality of competence possessed by graduates.Professional education will produce graduates who have analytical ability, able to think critically, including in decision making.Meanwhile, vocation is only equipped with the ability to work according to SOP standard that has been set.

“The graduates of professional education can advise, change the standards, and improve the standards, in accordance with the scholarship,” she said.

Currently, added Jumiarni, the number of midwives in Indonesia reached 450 thousand and spread both in urban to regional. As an autonomous profession, Jumiarni felt the need to fight for the transformation on the midwife’s education curriculum. That way, there will be no longer inequality of education and midwives can be partners with obstetricians.

Currently, Jumiarni explained, the government is intensively opening more professional education centers of midwifery in Indonesia and the midwife education level is arranged with other health workers.

“With the education of health management, one of them is midwife education, so in the transition process of the curriculum, we have to see the competence, and adjust to the new rules, the new policy about curriculum development, and the demands of the Indonesian National Qualification Framework (KKNI),” she said.

To respond to global challenges, Jumiarni said her institution is working to develop a curriculum tailored to the policies of the world midwife organization, including standards set by WHO.

“We try toreviewthe existing curriculum, and see what the current global curriculum trend is,” she said.

To that end, AIPKIND is working withThe University of Nottingham, England to assist the transformation of the midwife’s education curriculum.According to her,The University of Nottingham is one of the best midwifery education institutions in the UK who are experienced in developing midwife education.

Meanwhile, the transformation of the midwife’s education curriculum atThe University of Nottingham was fast.As Dr.Kim Russell stated that midwife education there initially only gave certificate but now it has been recognized as professional undergraduate program.

“Midwives are needed there, midwives should be able to provide quality services and conduct research. This is what makes our education system changes fast, ” she said.

Regulations for midwife profession are quite strong. The regulation stipulates that the authority to handle labor is only obstetricians and midwives while the patient is given the freedom to choose.

“The majority of women in the UK are more likely to choose a midwife rather than an obstetrician,” she said.

In the UK, the mortality rate of Mother and Child is very small, only 26/100 thousand of births. Cases of mortality in Indonesia is 17 times higher.Regarding this matter, Kim suggested, it is necessary to make clear rules for the midwife to work better, so it is expected to reduce the rate of mortality in Indonesia.

“Qualified midwives will decrease maternal and child mortality,” he concluded.
