UNAIR NEWS– Some fields of study, such as medical physics, have an association withan image output. In order to support such image processing capabilities, S1 Technobiomedic Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) (UNAIR) held a series of guest lectures onMedical Imagewith Prof.Geoff Dougherty, lecturer of California State University, in Room 205, Postgraduate Building, Campus B UNAIR on Tuesday, April 3.
“Thank you for taking part in this guest lecture. The workshop will be held for five meetings. So, everyone attending is expected to follow the whole series, “said Dr.Suryani Dyah Astuti, M. Si., Lecturer of S1 Technobiomedic UNAIR in the opening of the guest lecture.
Prof.Geoff is known as aprofessional engineer, especially in the field ofmedical images.Prior to his dedication at California State University, he had taught at Kuwait University.Furthermore, Prof.Geoff also wrote a book calledDigital Image Processing for Medical Applications. All guest lecture participants can access thee-bookfor free.
In that first meeting, Prof.Geoff explained the difference between analog and digital data including how to convert analog data to digital.Analog objects such asMonalisapaintingexperience continuous color changes.Meanwhile, the digital one changes suddenly in the form ofpixelswithcoderange0-225 from black to white.
Then, the exposure was continued with the introduction ofImageJapplicationalong with its components. Each participant, was encouraged to bring a laptop and install theImageJapplicationso that it can practice the science directly.
“罢丑别听ImageJapplication isdeveloped by theJavaprogramminglanguage. It is easy to use to give quantitative results on images such as area, color, length, and object angle. There are manypluginswith various features such as brightness, texture, and color, “explained ProfessorGeoff.

Prof.Geoff patiently guided the participants to operate theImageJfrom changing the image from RGB-colorto 8 bit so the image became gray and changing the brightness level of the image to analyze the area of 媼each particle.According to him, when there is lack of brightness, the image will experiencefalse contours.
“In this application, there is also a simple image processing feature. For example, cropto cut the parts that want to be analyzed, “he said.
At the end of the session, Suryani appealed to the participants to attend the next meeting because this series of guest lectures were very important and the material has continuity.(*)
