UNAIR NEWS– In order to give students insight, Faculty of Economics and Business held asharingeventwith alumni on Wednesday, April 26.Coming directly from The USA, Drs.Andreas Gunawan or Liem Tiauw Gwan, the first alumnus of FE in 1962. On that occasion, he shared his experience on establishing a company. He claimed that to establish a company, various tips are needed.
“At first, I wanted to set up a factory, I first learned all the rules. No doubt the bureaucracy takes a long time if there is no 渆nvelope, “he explained.
Gunawan also explained that in order to obtain the permit to establish a factory, he was assisted by the Minister of Industry at the time. They were close because he used to help collecting company data in Surabaya. In this case he stressed that if someone likes to help people, then others will help.
“With a permit, you should start thinking about what is this environment and the community needs, but it is not yet available.Starting to change the paradigm about building a company requires only capital, but requires the brain to think, “explained Gunawan.
At that time, Gunawan saw sandpaper products that had to be imported from China. He thought that sandpaper alone can be made in the country. With the best efforts, he began to investigate the types of sandpaper and its manufacturing technology.
“There are 136 types of sandpaper and they keep growing, from sandpaper for glasses to the surface of the aircraft. So, I tried to contact Norton as one of the largest sandpaper companies in the world, “said Gunawan in front of the students of Faculty of Economics and Business.
Initially, he tried to get sandpaper-making technology from Germany and Italy.Despite the ups and downs, he continued to be persistent to win the trust of Norton in Indonesia.
In addition, Gunawan believes that in running a company, we do not need only capital, raw materials, and humans as factors of production.Humans are needed in not just physical strength, but also the power of thought. So, he chose employees from STM graduates rather from elementary school.
“In choosing workers, do not choose as cheap as possible because cheap does not mean productivity,” he explained.
As a corporate leader, he asked all his employees to think about the company. As afeedback, theemployee came up with a good idea will get a salary bonus. It was proven, as he could save the use of raw materials, cost, and other methods.
“Leaders and employees are one unity. My wife and I also often assisted the activities of employees, such as social gathering. In fact, we invited employees to enjoy the holiday together with his family, “said the man.
From all of his achievements, he judged that success is different for everyone.Success according to him is being useful to society, able to serve God, and children can fend for themselves.
