Learning from Natural Phenomena, Instrumentation, to Medicine in Physics UNAIR

UNAIR NEWS Learning how the nature works. That was how Physics started and learned by academicians until present day. Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines.

Nicolaus Copernicus, for example, has founded heliocentric solar system theory. After two centuries, his theory was justified by Sir Isaac Newton who was also the founder of gravitational acceleration. In Modern Physics, there was also Albert Einstein which develops his special theory of relativity. What is his well-known equation? E=mc2. There is also Stephen Hawking who is known for his discovery in Quantum Physiscs, especially his theories on cosmology, black holes, quantum gravity and Hawking radiation.

In its development, Physics does not only learn about natural phenomena, but also about instrumentation, material to human body which has been studied in Medicine. Without neglecting the basic theories, both-either basic or applicative- can be learned, especially if you continue your study in Physics bachelor program, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), 51动漫.

淚n Physics there is fundamental physics which learns about Physics fundamentally, and there is applicative physics. The applicative one is used in the industrials or even medicine. Actually, Physics learns about the basic concepts of nature. So every natural phenomenon is learn in Physics. The curriculum covers the science and the application, said the coordinator of Physics bachelor program, Prof. Dr. M. Yasin, Drs., M.Si, during interview.

In UNAIR Physics, there are four concentrations such as Photonics which focuses on light and radiation source and fiber optics. Material physics which focuses on the material characteristic, either bio-material or non-material, particle theories and nanotechnology. There is also Computational Physics which make models or physical phenomena. There is also Instrumentation Physics which makes instruments for medical needs such as ECG (electrocardiography), or even non-medical.

Beside learning the basic theories in Physics I and II or Quantum Physics like any other universities, there are some elective courses, local contents. The local contents are what make this program special.

It was affected by UNAIR reputation as it is known as medical central studies. It can be seen from some courses named Biophysics, Medical Physics, Biomaterial, Biophysics Continuation, Instrumentation and Medical Signal.

淭he special one, application in medicine, biomaterial is used for bone re-implant , the other program may not have it. Photonics in medical field, for example for OCT and CT Scans, used optical program.I t is life science but it looks like medical, said Yasin.

Then how about the non-medical? Even it is limited, students of Physics held a field practice in National Nuclear Power Agency (BATAN) for a week.

In industrial application, the bachelor program collaborated with Sekolah Tinggi Energi dan Mineral Migas (STEM Akamigas), Cepu. UNAIR Physics academicians collaborated with the local oil company to develop application to measure the gas tank檚 height level, flow and the effects towards temperature.

With various requests, hopefully the students of UNAIR Physics bachelor program know the alternatives they can do during their studies. Into Physics, they do not have to be physicists like Copernicus, Newton, Einstein or even Hawking. But, you can apply the natural knowledge in Medicine and Industrials.

淏y getting into UNAIR Physics, the graduates ideally become scientists. But not all of them become scientists. Getting into Physics, they can continue study further as there are a lot of scholarships. They can also start their career in professional world in Medicine or Industrials, said Yasin. (*)
