UNAIR NEWS International Relations expert Baiq Lekar Sinayang Wahyu Wardhani, MA., Ph.D., considered that Burmese government is facing a political and economic dilemma. This dilemma made the government difficult to take measure on humanity tragedy of Rohingya.
From political aspect, the 1991 nobel peace laurate and the current Burmese political leader is anxious. Suu Kyi realizes that the party behind her is the military regime once who disagreed with her for few decades.
淎ung San Suu Kyi as the leader of ruling party is in a difficult position. The international community condemn, but she may also consider the power around her, the military regime. She did not want to raise an issue which will make situation more difficult, she explained.
淲e all know that Suu Kyi and the regime had long history of conflict, she added.
From the political economic aspect, according to the author of 湞 in Global dan Strategic 2012 journal, said that there is Chinese influence in it to exploit the natures in Rakhine state, as it has potential for oil.
淭here檚 China involvement in it. Rohingya people are expelled because of the oil. The local government may have calculated that if they work with China, they will get the profit rather than busy with international community, said the lecturer of International Relations.
Academic Community Role
Before ending the discussion, Baiq said that as academics the best contribution to give the best enlightenment on what is really happening. It is important to do as there are issues and deteriorated situation.
淩ecommendation from academic community is different from the one from the government. It didn檛 mean that we don檛 want to but we do not want to worsen the situation. We should give the enlightenment to the public on what really happening, she said. (*)
