MIF FF UNAIR Students Participate in Joint Research Activities at UiTM Malaysia

Three Master of Pharmaceutical Science students of the Faculty of Pharmacy, 51动漫 (MIF FF UNAIR), namely Firman Wicaksana, Maylisa Natalia Corry, and Zunita Puspita Sari have conducted joint research at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. This program lasts for two weeks from November 14 to December 2, 2024 as a form of collaboration between FF UNAIR and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

During the program, UiTM provides a great opportunity to deepen knowledge and skills related to dereplication and isolation of compounds. With intensive guidance from Dr. Che Puteh, an expert in the fields of natural product chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and herbal analysis, the insights of the three students have expanded, especially in their thesis research which focuses on the isolation of natural compounds with antimalarial and antihepatitis C activities. This focus is in line with one of UiTM’s leading research programs, which strengthens the relevance and quality of the collaboration carried out.

The dereplication process conducted helped students understand the compound components in the extract through molecular weight (MS) data analysis. This collaboration enriched the analytical approach and added depth and variety of data for our research. In addition, modern facilities owned by UiTM, such as Ultra High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC), Mass Spectrometry (MS), and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) 600 MHz, provided significant contributions in strengthening the data, especially for the dereplication process and elucidation of the structure of active compounds.

This experience also had a major impact on the development of the three students’ theses, both in terms of the quality of analysis and self-confidence in completing the research. In addition to improving technical skills, guidance from UiTM lecturers also enriched their academic perspectives. Not only that, thanks to this program they were able to expand their academic networks with other students and researchers even across countries, thus opening up opportunities for collaboration in the future.

“More than just completing a thesis, this student outbound experience is an important stepping stone in the development of our academic and professional careers. This program not only adds value to the education we take but also becomes an initial milestone towards a greater contribution in the world of research and development of science.” they explained.
