East Java Prosecutor’s Office Guest Lecture: Emphasizes The Importance of Legal Awareness and Anti-Corruption Attitudes for the Young Generation

Faculty of Law, 51动漫 (FH UNAIR), again held a guest lecture with the East Java High Court. The guest lecture which was held on Monday, January 30, 2023, in Hall 303 Building A FH UNAIR was attended by Dr. Mia Amiati, S.H., M.H., Head of the East Java High Prosecutor’s Office.

Dr. Mia explained the material regarding “The Attorney’s Role in Law Enforcement”. The duties and powers of the Attorney General’s Office, he said, are regulated in Article 30 of Law Number 16 of 2004 in conjunction with Law Number 11 of 2021. In the criminal field, prosecutors play the role of investigative and Public Prosecutors. Meanwhile, in civil and state administration, the prosecutor acts as the State Attorney.

“In the areas of intelligence, public order, and security, as referred to in Article 30 paragraph (3) of Law Number 16 of 2004 in conjunction with Law Number 11 of 2021, the prosecutor has the role of supervisor of law enforcement policies, supervision of circulation of printed materials, supervisor of public trust, and others,” said Dr. Mia.

In addition to explaining the prosecutor’s duties, Dr. Mia also emphasized the importance of having legal awareness. According to him, existing law can never happen if there is no awareness to obey it. However, there is a theory that says that the law is binding on the community only based on the legal understanding that is owned by the community itself.

“Thus, legal awareness in the campus environment is fundamental because awareness of the law can also shape the law itself. Apart from strengthening and making the most of the law, several things need to be emphasized so that legal awareness can apply as it should,” he said.

In terms of raising legal awareness, several things need to be emphasized, one of which is legal awareness must be based on knowledge of what law is. In addition to knowledge of the law, understanding and awareness of legal obligations to other people are also essential factors for the law to work as it should. The last factor that is no less important is accepting the law.

“Even though people know and understand the law, understand their legal obligations to other people, if they don’t want to accept the law, then a state of legal awareness will not materialize, and the law will not be able to work as it should. Therefore, we also need to practice accepting the law,” explained Dr. Mia.

In addition to having legal awareness, anti-corruption attitudes are also essential to be developed among the younger generation. Corruption is a social parasite that destroys the structure of government and becomes the main obstacle to the running of government and development in general. The number of corruption cases that are happening at this time makes the Attorney General’s Office face a big challenge to be able to work on prevention which must continue to be campaigned for all elements of society, including the young generation who will continue the nation which is known as the Campus Entry Attorney Program.

To avoid becoming a corrupt generation, the Attorney General’s Office takes preventive measures by introducing the school/campus environment to do simple things that start with oneself. Enlightenment students and students must recognize and know the forms of corrupt behavior, starting from simple behaviors that can prevent corruption, such as being honest and responsible.

“To form an anti-corruption generation, at least three behaviors are needed: being responsible, living simply, and being fair. In the context of combating corruption among the younger generation, we need to instill awareness to take responsibility for carrying out an anti-corruption culture, positive national aspirations, enforce sanctions and the power to crack down on and punish acts of corruption, build and spread an ethos both personal and other people’s ownership, fostering a clean political understanding and culture, and fostering a sense of belonging among the younger generation,” said Dr. Mia.

In closing, Dr. Mia hopes that all young people in Indonesia will be able to instill a sense of anti-corruption. The younger generation is the pioneer of a better change movement for Indonesia. With honesty in action, it will make Indonesia better.
