The main thing that must be achieved when discussing the internationalization of higher education is the issue of publications. The academic community is expected to be able to release reputable publications in international journals to expand the scope of knowledge dissemination. Therefore, UNAIR Faculty of Law held a workshop entitled “Introduction to International Journals and Utilization of Airlangga Law Library (ALL) Facilities” on Friday afternoon (11/11/2022). Two topics have been explored in the seminar. The first is related to writing and tracking access to reputable international journals; the second is the use of Mendeley and access to the Airlangga Law Library.
The speaker who discussed the first topic was the Head of Research Development Unit, Community Service, and Scientific Publications (UP4I) FH UNAIR Dr. Intan Inayatun Soeparna. Intan said that a good international journal is determined by the quality of peer review and the article’s citation. Therefore, articles for international journals must be contextual and not repetitive, and are felt to need to be conveyed to the public. He also added that anything could be an inspiration; the most important thing is making that inspiration scientific.
“The topic of the article can be taken from the dissertation that the doctoral colleagues here are writing. It can be just one chapter of your dissertation or a summary of your entire thesis. After finding a topic, you have to look for a journal to publish the article, “said the UNAIR FH lecturer.
Intan explained that journal compatibility must be based on the topic being written. For example, if you have a dissertation titled “The Implications of WTO Retaliation to Private Economic Actors: To What Extent State Liability Is Accomplished?”, then a suitable journal specializes in WTO, economics, and international trade law. From there, you can search Google for keywords like ‘WTO journal’ or ‘international trade journal’. Intan also said that international-reputed article submissions were limited to journals and conferences.
“After finding it, you must write according to the conditions given. If you get a review or rejection from the editor, you must carefully read the suggestions. These comments will be beneficial for advancing our writing abilities and broadening our academic insights regarding this topic,” said the VUB alumnus.
The speaker who discussed the second topic was UNAIR Faculty of Law Librarian Ubaidillah, S.IIP. At the beginning of his presentation, Ubaidillah introduced citation software called Mendeley and the ways to use it. There, he also showed how to enter FH UNAIR’s citation format into Mendeley’s citation format, where the file can be accessed at ALL. Talking about ALL, it is an online library page owned by FH UNAIR.
“At ALL, visitors can access archives of final student assignments starting from theses to dissertations. Not only that, UNAIR FH students can enjoy free access to international journal pages such as JSTOR and Taylor and Francis. This access will certainly help friends increase the amount of literature needed to write international articles,” said the librarian.
