Introduction
From July 21 to July 30, 2025, I, a veterinary medicine student from Airlangga University, embarked
on a meaningful internship journey at Setapak Veterinary Clinic in Kuala Lumpur. Unlike previous
placements in animal shelters, this internship provided a hands-on experience in a private veterinary
practice setting攐ffering a valuable perspective on clinical operations, diagnostics, and direct patient
care.
The Heart of Setapak Veterinary Clinic
Setapak Veterinary Clinic is a well-established facility that provides comprehensive medical services
to pets in the surrounding community. Beyond treating illnesses, the clinic focuses on preventative
care, surgical procedures, and client education. With a team of experienced veterinarians and
dedicated staff, the clinic plays a vital role in promoting animal health and welfare through
compassionate, evidence-based care.
Why I Went There
The main objective of this internship was to gain firsthand clinical experience and understand the
daily responsibilities of practicing veterinarians. I aimed to observe diagnostic procedures, learn
treatment protocols, and familiarize myself with the pace and expectations of a professional veterinary
environment. It was also a chance to refine my practical skills and grow as a future veterinary
professional.
Experiences and Learning
Throughout the 10-day internship, I was involved in various tasks and observations that strengthened
both my technical knowledge and interpersonal skills. Some of the highlights included:
鈼 Clinical Exposure: I observed consultations, vaccination sessions, and several minor surgical
procedures. These real-life cases helped me understand the diagnostic process and clinical
decision-making in treating common pet health issues.
鈼 Animal Handling and Care: I learned and practiced safe handling techniques, assisted with basic
procedures, and monitored animals during their recovery. These tasks deepened my appreciation for
precision and patience in veterinary care.
鈼 Communication and Client Interaction: Watching how the clinic檚 veterinarians communicated
with pet owners taught me how to explain medical conditions and care instructions clearly and
empathetically攁 crucial skill in building trust with clients.鈼 Team Collaboration: Working with the clinic team gave me insight into the importance of
teamwork, workflow coordination, and mutual support in delivering efficient veterinary services.
These experiences were not only educational but also emotionally impactful. Moments such as
witnessing a sick pet regain strength or seeing the joy on a client檚 face after a successful treatment
made each day rewarding.
Conclusion
The independent internship at Setapak Veterinary Clinic was a transformative and eye-opening
experience. It enriched my clinical understanding, enhanced my practical skills, and reinforced my
passion for veterinary medicine.
Every day spent in the clinic reminded me why I chose this profession攖o advocate for animal health,
relieve suffering, and contribute meaningfully to the lives of both animals and their owners. I am
grateful for this opportunity and excited to continue learning and growing in this field.
