From 14th July to 7th August 2025, I had the opportunity to join an independent internship
program at My Animal Clinic & Surgery in Melaka, Malaysia. This clinic, established in 2016
and led by Dr. Loh and Puan Loh together with their team of veterinarians, has built a
reputation for its professional yet friendly service and its commitment to providing modern
veterinary care for both companion animals and exotics. Stepping into this clinic for the first
time, I felt both nervous and excited, knowing that this experience would challenge me to
apply what I had learned in university and prepare me for the realities of veterinary practice.
During the internship, I was able to observe and assist with a variety of cases that were both
eye-opening and enriching. One of the most memorable experiences was witnessing a
pyometra surgery in a cat. Seeing the swollen, infected uterus being carefully removed
through an ovariohysterectomy made me realize just how critical timely surgical intervention
can be in saving a life. On another day, I was involved in treating a dog with a maggot-infested
wound. The dog was aggressive, so we first had to handle it carefully before cleaning the
wound, removing all the maggots, and applying medication to prevent further infection. This
case reminded me of the importance of patience and caution when dealing with animals in
pain.
I also had the chance to learn about long-term case management, such as monitoring blood
pressure in an elderly dog with hypertension. Recording the values and understanding what
they meant in the context of heart disease taught me how important regular monitoring is for
chronic conditions. Another case that struck me deeply was a cat suffering from chronic oral
ulcers. I saw how a seemingly small lesion in the mouth could cause such distress, affectingthe cat檚 ability to eat and live comfortably. It emphasized to me that even subtle clinical signs
should never be overlooked.
Emergency cases were perhaps the most intense and humbling experiences. One particular
dog came in after ingesting a toxic substance, presenting with severe signs like vomiting,
dehydration, and gastrointestinal bleeding. Assisting in stabilizing this patient with fluid
therapy, antiemetics, and gastric protectants made me realize how quickly veterinarians must
act in critical situations. Similarly, I was involved in the management of a cat with urinary
blockage, where diagnostic work such as urinalysis and ultrasound led to the insertion of a
urinary catheter to relieve the obstruction. These moments were both challenging and
rewarding, as they gave me a glimpse of how much responsibility lies in a veterinarian檚 hands.
Throughout these weeks, I not only gained practical skills but also learned invaluable lessons
about communication, teamwork, and empathy. Observing how the veterinarians interacted
with pet owners sometimes consoling them during stressful moments, other times explaining
complex medical procedures with patience and clarity made me appreciate the importance of
trust in the veterinary profession. I also learned that being a veterinarian is not just about
treating animals, it is equally about supporting the people who love and care for them.
Looking back, this internship was more than just a training program. It was a transformative
journey that deepened my understanding of veterinary medicine and solidified my passion for
this profession. I felt challenged at times, especially when faced with difficult cases or when
my own knowledge felt limited, but those challenges became opportunities to grow. I am truly
grateful to Dr. Loh, Puan Loh, and the entire team at My Animal Clinic & Surgery for their
guidance, patience, and encouragement. Their mentorship has inspired me to continue
learning with dedication and to strive toward becoming a compassionate, skilled, and reliable
veterinarian in the future.
