During my semester break, I had the incredible opportunity to intern at my local vet clinic, Pawland Clinic, for a month. This experience was a significant step in my journey as a first-year veterinary student, offering me hands-on exposure to the world of veterinary medicine under the guidance of Dr. Tracy and her dedicated team. Their willingness to teach me with patience and care made this internship an invaluable experience.
One of the most fascinating aspects of my internship was the chance to observe basic surgeries daily. Castration and spaying were the most common procedures, performed both on stray and pet animals. These surgeries play a crucial role in controlling the stray population and preventing future health issues such as pyometra. Before every surgery, the animals underwent blood tests to ensure they were healthy enough for the procedure, a process that highlighted the importance of pre-operative care.
Watching these surgeries not only deepened my understanding of animal anatomy but also gave me insight into the practical side of veterinary medicine. I witnessed firsthand the meticulous care taken by the vets to ensure each animal’s safety and well-being during surgery.
Apart from the routine surgeries, I had the chance to observe a few more complex procedures, such as hernia surgeries and mass extractions. Each of these surgeries presented its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. However, the case that stood out to me the most was the spaying of a pregnant cat. and after the procedure, I was given the opportunity to examine the uterus that had been removed. As a first-year vet student, I had studied anatomy in textbooks, but seeing it firsthand was an entirely different experience. I was able to apply my knowledge in a practical setting, which was both fascinating and educational. Afterward, I ethically disposed of the uterus and the unborn kittens, a task that reinforced the importance of responsibility and care in this profession.
Beyond the surgery room, I also had the chance to tag along during daily consultations. This was an eye-opening experience, as I learned not only the technical skills of handling animals but also the crucial art of communication with pet owners. Observing Dr. Tracy and her team as they interacted with clients taught me the importance of empathy, patience, and clarity in communication. I realized that a significant part of being a veterinarian involves educating and guiding pet owners to make informed decisions about their animals’ health.
During these consultations I saw cases ranging from routine check-ups , vaccines and allergies to more complex issues like broken limbs, pneumonia , seizures and much more. I also had the chance to learn about severe conditions like parvovirus in dogs and feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) in cats, both of which are devastating diseases requiring careful diagnosis and treatment. Each case provided a learning opportunity, whether it was understanding how to calm an anxious animal or explaining treatment options to concerned owners. This experience reinforced the importance of building trust with clients, which is essential for successful veterinary practice.
This internship was more than just an opportunity to observe surgeries and treatments; it was a chance to immerse myself in the day-to-day realities of veterinary practice. I gained a deeper appreciation for the profession and the responsibilities it brings. I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Tracy and her team for their guidance and support. Their willingness to share their knowledge and experience has made a lasting impact on me, and I look forward to continuing my journey in the field of veterinary medicine in the future.
