Our Internship Experience at Sri Petaling Veterinary Clinic Sdn Bhd

From December 26, 2024, to January 9, 2025, we had the privilege of interning at Sri Petaling Veterinary Clinic Sdn Bhd. This two-week experience provided an invaluable opportunity to immerse ourselves in the daily operations of a veterinary clinic, expand our practical knowledge, and strengthen our clinical skills.

This was our second internship at the clinic, and the familiarity with the environment and staff allowed us to engage in more hands-on activities compared to our first experience. The internship primarily involved shadowing the veterinarians, observing their diagnostic approaches, and learning how they communicated effectively with clients about their pets™ conditions and treatment plans. It was fascinating to witness how every case, from routine check-ups to more complex health concerns, was handled with professionalism and compassion.

One of the highlights of the internship was assisting during castration and spaying surgeries. We were actively involved in preparing the surgical tools, monitoring the patients™ vital signs, and observing the intricate techniques the veterinarians employed. This experience not only deepened our understanding of surgical procedures but also emphasized the importance of teamwork and attention to detail in ensuring the safety and success of every operation.

In addition to surgeries, we participated in diagnostic procedures such as X-rays and ultrasounds. These imaging techniques were instrumental in identifying underlying issues in patients, and observing the veterinarians interpret the results was incredibly educational. We also learned to perform wound cleaning and care, which reinforced the importance of proper aseptic techniques in preventing infections and promoting healing.

One of the most exciting aspects of the internship was gaining hands-on experience in tasks such as drawing blood, administering fluids, and dispensing medications. These practical skills required precision, patience, and a steady hand, and being entrusted with these responsibilities was both rewarding and empowering. Moreover, it allowed us to build confidence in handling animals and managing clinical tasks under supervision.

Beyond the clinical work, the internship provided an opportunity to deepen our appreciation for the veterinary profession. The dedication and expertise of the veterinarians at Sri Petaling Veterinary Clinic were truly inspiring. Their willingness to guide and teach us throughout the internship made the learning process enjoyable and enriching.

Overall, our time at Sri Petaling Veterinary Clinic was an unforgettable experience. It not only enhanced our practical skills and knowledge but also reinforced our passion for veterinary medicine. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to intern there for a second time and for the warm and supportive environment provided by the entire team. This experience has undoubtedly strengthened our resolve to pursue excellence in our future veterinary career.

In addition, this internship experience aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being. By contributing to animal health and welfare, the clinic plays a vital role in promoting overall public health and ensuring the well-being of the animals under its care. Learning and participating in such efforts has deepened our understanding of how veterinary practices intersect with broader global health objectives, inspiring us to incorporate these values into our future career.
