On the 7th of July 2025, I began my internship at SubangVet SS14 clinic in my home country of Malaysia. My goals for the internship were to develop the practical skills and knowledge needed to help me in my path to becoming a great veterinarian. I began my internship with the hope of learning more about how to handle and restrain various types of animals during consultation and treatment. I also wanted to be able to observe consultations in order to learn how experienced veterinarians diagnose their patients. I also hoped to learn the ways a veterinary clinic function smoothly.
During my internship, I was taught how to check on inpatients in the morning, referring to their charts and using ABUVD (appetite, bowel, urine, vomiting, diarrhea). After updating the charts, I was taught to clean food bowls and sanitise each cage. I was also able to assist the doctors with morning treatments such as wound cleaning, laser treatment and feeding medication. I observed multiple consultations and assisted with the preparation of medications to be dispensed.
Beyond technical skills, I also gained more experience in teamwork and communication. Working with experienced veterinarians and technicians taught me the importance of communication in order to keep things moving fast and orderly in the clinic. I also got to see the challenges of maintaining professionalism in the face of grieving or worried owners. By assisting with consultations, I was able to develop my handling skills. I was given instructions and critiques regarding my technique and the proper way to restrain a patient. I was also able to see a unique variety of exotic animals which is very motivating to me with my aspirations to specialize in exotics.
Good Health and Well-Being, which emphasises the importance of health for all living beings. By providing proper animal care, veterinarians therefore contribute to both animal welfare and also to human health.
In conclusion, I believe that my internship experience has been incredibly beneficial in my journey to become a proper veterinarian. I am incredibly grateful for all the doctors and staff at SubangVet SS14 for their patience and guidance. I hope to learn more this semester and be able to apply my theoretical knowledge in a practical setting in the future. This internship has been a wonderful experience and will undoubtedly serve as a strong foundation for my future as a veterinarian.
