Surabaya – Public Relation | The International Literation Day was commemorated annually on the eighth of September. The main point of the celebration is to emphasize the importance of literacy skills. Based on the survey held by the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development titled Program of International Student Assessment or PISA held in 2019, Indonesia is among the ten lowest ranked countries. According to that fact, Prof. Dr. Rahma Sugihartati, Dra., M.Si., as a Professor of the Informational and Science Department, would like to give her opinion on the importance of literacy skills in the modern era.
In her interview, Prof. Rahma explained the importance of literacy skills in solving everyday problems. 淣ot only writing, reading, and processing the information stated, literacy skills includes the implementation of those information on suitable problems, Prof. Rahma stated. As technology is an integral part of society, digital literacy is widely promoted by the Indonesia government to increase people檚 interest in literacy.
According to Prof. Rahma, there are three main aspects of digital literacy. First, the capability of operating electronic devices. Second, cognitive skills in critical-uses of electronic devices. And third, respect for others privacy on the internet. Prof. Rahma stated that Indonesians lack the understanding for the second and third aspects. 淲ith plenty of hoaxes being spread around the internet, it shows the lack of understanding of electronic device檚 critical uses. The implementation of the privacy aspect on the internet also need major improvement, Prof. Rahma stated.
At the closure of the interview, Prof. Rahma wished that FISIP檚 students could be the leading example of digital literacy檚 good implementation. 淚 think students could be the model of good digital literacy uses, Prof. Rahma concluded.
