Prof. Bagong: School Must Prioritize Ethical Education

UNAIR NEWS “The case of maltreatment committed by students against one teacher at SMAN 1 Torjun, Sampang Regency, attracted the attention of many people, including from the experts in the world of academics. In response to the case,UNAIR NEWSmanaged to meet one of the Professors of .He is Prof.Dr.Bagong Suyanto, Drs., M.Sc.

Interviewed at the Sociology Department of UNAIR on Tuesday, February 6, Prof.Bagong explained his observations about violence among children.According to him, the mischief done by school-age children cannot be separated from the efforts of the children themselves in building a reputation through violence.

“There is a subculture of bully boy.It becomes a social identity. So, if he wants to be accepted into a group and respected in that group, then he does is to show his strength, “explained Prof.Bagong.

Other than that, Prof.Bagong added that children who have a good academic reputation will tend to build a reputation of academic achievement. But marginal children who are not in the academic achievement category usually tend to build a reputation by building a violent subculture.

”Well, the children in this violent subculture later becomebully, pretentious, likes to bully his own friends, and even trouble the teacher,” he said.

Regarding the role of the school, Prof.Bagong emphasized that most schools in Indonesia are still unable to build good character in students. This can be seen from the education system that forces students to compete to be the best.

“This makes the values ‹‹of solidarity, courtesy, social cohesion not well cultivated.Construction that students should respect teachers, solidarity, and tolerance must be high and it does not grow in the students™ head, “said Professor of Economic Sociology FISIP UNAIR.

At the end, when asked about efforts to prevent the emergence of problems that occurred in SMAN 1 Torjun, Prof.Bagong replied that it takes effort to change the system applied by education.

“I think there should be a change ofgrandeducationdesign. The key is teaching tolerance, respect differences among others, so in addition to preventing violence subculture, cases ofbullyingand the loss of ethics towards teachers will not happen again, “he concluded.
